Some dates in Croatia never move: the Dubrovnik festival always runs 10 July to 25 August, the Alka is always the first Sunday in August, and the Rijeka carnival follows Easter. Here is what can already be planned around, and what is still open.
Checked: 26 August 2026
Anyone planning a trip to Croatia for 2027 runs into the same problem in autumn: most organisers publish their dates in spring, some only weeks before. But a surprising number of dates are already certain, because they are fixed by the calendar rather than by a committee. This page separates the two, and says plainly which is which.
Fixed, and not moving
| Date | Event | Why it is certain |
|---|---|---|
| 07.02.2027 | Rijeka Carnival, main parade | Always the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. Easter falls on 28 March 2027. |
| 10.07. – 25.08.2027 | Dubrovnik Summer Festival | The same 47 days every year since 1950. |
| 01.08.2027 | Sinjska alka | Always the first Sunday in August, since 1715. UNESCO heritage. |
| 15.08.2027 | Assumption, a Sunday in 2027 | Public holiday. Ferries and roads are at their fullest; the long weekend effect falls away because it is a Sunday. |
| 28.11.2027 | Advent in Zagreb begins | Always the first Sunday of Advent, four Sundays before 25 December. |
The pattern is known, the date is not yet
| Usual window | Event | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Late May | Špancirfest opening weekend of the season | Varaždin, Zagreb |
| Mid July | Ultra Europe | Split |
| Late August, ten days | Špancirfest | Varaždin |
| Turn of August and September, two nights | Rovinjska noć | Rovinj |
| Mid September | Vinkovačke jeseni | Vinkovci |
| October weekends | Marunada, the chestnut festival | Lovran |
| 11 November | Martinje, young wine day | Everywhere, strongest in the north |
What this means for booking
- The five fixed dates above are enough to plan a year around. Accommodation in Dubrovnik between 10 July and 25 August, and in Sinj on the first August weekend, sells out first.
- For the second group, book flexible accommodation and confirm once the organiser publishes. Most do so between February and April.
- Public holidays matter more than festivals for roads and ferries. In 2027 both Assumption on 15 August and Statehood Day on 30 May fall on a Sunday, so neither creates a long weekend.
