Croatia 2027: the festival dates that are already fixed

Anyone planning a trip to Croatia for 2027 runs into the same problem in autumn: most organisers publish their dates in spring, some only weeks before. But a surprising number of dates are already certain, because the calendar sets them. This page separates the two, and says plainly which is which.

What this means for booking

• The five fixed dates above are enough to plan a year around. Accommodation in Dubrovnik between 10 July and 25 August, and in Sinj on the Alka weekend, sells out first.
• For the second group, book flexible accommodation and confirm once the organiser publishes. Most do so between February and April.
• Public holidays matter more than festivals for roads and ferries. In 2027 both Assumption on 15 August and Statehood Day on 30 May fall on a Sunday, so neither creates a long weekend.

Getting to the festival towns

None of the fixed events needs a car. Dubrovnik airport at Čilipi is about 20 km south of the city, and the airport bus runs to the bus station in Gruž and on to the Pile Gate. Sinj is 35 km inland from Split, about 60 minutes by bus from the Split bus station next to the ferry port, and Split airport at Kaštela is 25 km west of the city. Rijeka has an airport on the island of Krk, but its flights are seasonal, so in February the practical entry is Zagreb, with buses to Rijeka in about 2 hours 30 on the motorway. Varaždin is 80 km north of Zagreb, reached by bus from the main bus station or by train. For Advent, Zagreb airport at Pleso is 15 km from the centre with a shuttle bus to the main bus station and trams from there.

Where to stay for each event

In Dubrovnik the choice is the Old Town, where every venue is a few minutes on foot but the streets are loud until midnight and prices are the highest in the country, or Lapad and Gruž, where most hotels are and a bus reaches the Pile Gate in about 15 minutes. Sinj has about 11,000 people and few rooms, so almost everyone watches the Alka from a base in Split or Trogir and takes the bus up for the day. Rijeka's hotels around the Korzo fill for the carnival weekend, and Opatija, 15 km west with far more beds, works as a base with a local bus along the coast. Varaždin is small and its hotels go early for Špancirfest, with Zagreb as the fallback. For Advent, stay in the Lower Town between the main station and Ban Jelačić square and walk to everything.

Public holidays in 2027

The two summer Sunday holidays aside, 2027 has several public holidays on working days, and in Croatia that matters. A holiday on a Thursday empties offices on the Friday as well, the motorway to the coast fills the evening before, and most shops, supermarkets included, close for the day. Petrol stations, station kiosks and cafes stay open, and restaurants and museums in the tourist towns carry on as usual. The year opens with a long weekend, because 1 January is a Friday, and Easter comes early, on 28 March, with Easter Monday a holiday.

The Alka weekend in Sinj

The Alka is a horseback tournament that has run since 1715 in memory of the town's defence against an Ottoman army that year. Riders in 18th century dress gallop down a street track and aim a lance at a small iron ring hung on a rope across the course, and a strike through the centre scores 3 points. The Sunday is the final, but the same riders run the course on the Friday, called Bara, and the Saturday, called Čoja, and those two days are easier to watch from close up. Grandstand seats for the Sunday are sold in advance, the standing places along the barriers are first come and fill by early afternoon. The Dubrovnik festival on the ground

The festival opens on the evening of 10 July in front of St Blaise's church with the raising of the Libertas flag and fireworks over the old harbour. Over the following 47 days the performances are spread across the open spaces of the Old Town: the Lovrijenac fort above the western walls for theatre, the atrium of the Rector's Palace for chamber music, the courtyard of the Sponza palace, Gradac park and the Lazareti outside the Ploče gate. Most start late in the evening, after the heat has gone, and end towards midnight. The programme is published in spring and tickets are sold online and at the festival box office in the Old Town. Plays are in Croatian, concerts and dance need no language.

The Rijeka carnival in February

The carnival season in Rijeka opens in the middle of January, when the mayor hands the city keys to the carnival master, and runs until the parade on 7 February 2027. The children's parade takes a Saturday on an earlier weekend. On the Sunday itself more than 100 groups and about 10,000 people in costume walk the Korzo and the waterfront from early afternoon into the evening, and the day ends with the burning of the Pust, the straw figure blamed for the year's ills. Look for the zvončari, the bell ringers from the villages above Kastav in sheepskins and animal masks, on the UNESCO list since 2009. It is early February on the Kvarner: expect 5 to 10 degrees, rain or a bura wind, and dress for standing outside for hours.

Common mistakes

Most of the trouble with a festival trip comes from treating a Croatian date like one at home. The events run to their own clock, the towns are small, and a public holiday closes more than you expect. These are the errors that come up most often.

• Booking a non-refundable week in Split for Ultra Europe before the organiser publishes, then finding the festival has moved by a week.
• Driving into Sinj on Alka Sunday. The track is a closed street, parking is on the edge of town, and the bus from Split is easier.
• Turning up at Lovrijenac on the night without a ticket. The popular productions sell out weeks ahead, so buy online once the programme appears.
• Assuming shops open on a public holiday. Most do not, supermarkets included, so buy food the day before.
• Packing for summer for the Rijeka carnival. Early February on the coast is a winter day, with wind off the sea and rain likely.
• Expecting Martinje on 11 November itself. Most towns and cellars hold the celebration on the nearest weekend, so check which weekend your place has chosen.
• Arriving for Advent on a December Saturday evening. The stalls on Zrinjevac are at their fullest then, and a weekday afternoon is calmer.
