Croatian summer ends on the calendar, not in the programme. September and October keep the warm sea and lose the queues, and the autumn festivals are the ones locals actually go to: chestnuts on the Kvarner coast, white truffles in the Istrian hills, young wine everywhere on 11 November, then the Advent lights. Everything below has a confirmed date from the organiser.

October
October is the month the coast hands over to the hills. Zigante Truffle Days run in Livade every Saturday and Sunday from 3 October to 1 November, 10:00 to 19:00, with more than fifty exhibitors and truffle hunting demonstrations. The 51st Marunada spreads across three weekends of chestnut cooking: Lovran from 9 to 11 October, Dobreć on 17 and 18, Liganj on 24 and 25. And from 21 to 25 October the 28th Biograd Boat Show fills Marina Kornati, which is the largest nautical fair in this part of the Adriatic.
November
November opens with chocolate in Opatija from 6 to 8, then Croatia's wine regions take over on 11 November for Martinje, when the must is symbolically baptised into wine. The Zagreb Film Festival runs 9 to 15 November and Interliber, the country's biggest book fair, follows from 10 to 15 November at the Zagreb Fair. The month closes with the switch that changes the whole country: Advent in Zagreb starts on 28 November and runs to 6 January.
What autumn saves you
The money difference is not small. National park tickets drop on 1 October: Plitvice from 40 to 23.50 euro for adults, Krka from 40 to 20 euro. Accommodation on the coast falls with them, ferries move to the winter timetable from late September, and the sea stays swimmable into early October on the southern Adriatic. The trade is daylight and opening hours: many island restaurants and small museums close from mid October, so check before building a day around one.
