Before you book

  • Bring a credit card in the main driver's name: the deposit is blocked on it, and many companies do not accept debit or prepaid cards.
  • Collision damage cover (CDW) is usually included, but with an excess; compare offers with the same excess and fuel policy.
  • Taking the car on a ferry to the islands needs the rental company's permission, sometimes for a fee.
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina or Montenegro need the company's approval, the green card and usually a cross-border fee.
  • Book an automatic early: most fleets are manual, and automatics for July and August are gone by June.
  • Photograph every panel, the wheels, the windscreen and the fuel gauge at pickup and again at return.

Frequently asked questions

When is a rental car cheapest in Croatia?
In the off season. At Split the average is about €11 a day in February and €36 in July; at the other big airports the cheapest month is November or February and the dearest July or August, as the overview above shows.
Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Croatia?
In practice yes. The deposit is blocked on a credit card in the main driver's name, and many companies reject debit and prepaid cards.
Can I take a rental car on the ferry?
Yes, with the rental company's permission. Tell the desk which islands you plan to visit; some companies charge a ferry or island fee.
Is it better to rent at the airport or in town?
Airports have the most companies and the longest opening hours. If you spend the first days in Split or Dubrovnik on foot, rent only for the days you leave the city.
