Zagreb is not the only Advent in Croatia. Five coastal cities run their own from the last November weekend, with milder weather and a fraction of the crowds. What each one is like, the dates from the last edition, and which ones are confirmed for 2026. Updated as the cities publish.

Advent in Zagreb draws the headlines, but the coastal cities have built their own over the last decade, and for anyone who wants mulled wine at eight degrees rather than minus two, they are the better choice. The first Advent Sunday in 2026 falls on 29 November, and the coast opens its stalls on or around that weekend and keeps them until Epiphany. The tourist boards publish exact dates and programmes in October. Until then, this is what each city did last year and what to expect; we update the confirmed dates here as they appear.
Rijeka: the Korzo and the harbour
Last edition: 29 November to 11 January. Rijeka Advent runs along the Korzo and down to the waterfront, with the stalls on the main street, an ice rink, concerts on the square by the city tower and the ships in the port lit for the season. It is the most urban of the coastal Advents and the one with the longest programme, ending only after the Orthodox Christmas. Trsat above the town adds a second, quieter market by the sanctuary. 2026 dates: not yet published.
Opatija: villas under lights
Last edition: 28 November to 6 January. Opatija's Advent is the prettiest to look at: the Angiolina park and the belle-époque villas are lit, the stalls stand on the seafront by the Slatina beach, and there is an ice rink with the Kvarner behind it. Concerts happen in the Gervais centre and on the open-air stage, and New Year's Eve on the promenade is the town's biggest night. The Lungomare stays walkable all winter. 2026 dates: not yet published.
Zadar: the forum and the sea organ
Last edition: 27 November to 1 January. Zadar opens earliest and closes with New Year; the stalls stand on the Roman forum and Narodni trg, with a rink, a children's programme and the Christmas run through the old town. The sea organ and the Greeting to the Sun work in December as in July, and sunset from the Riva is at half past four. 2026 dates: not yet published.
Split and Pula: the Riva and the Arena
Split's Advent fills the Riva and the squares of Diocletian's palace with stalls and stages from the end of November, and the New Year's concert on the Riva is one of the largest in the country; our separate Split Advent guide has the detail. Pula lights the Forum, the Portarata and the streets around the Arena, and opens its rink by the market; it is the smallest of the five and the easiest to combine with a quiet Istrian winter weekend. Both cities publish their 2026 dates in October.
