New Year in Croatia: a free concert on every main square

New Year's Eve in Croatia is a public event before it is a private one. Every city of any size books an act, puts a stage on the main square and lets people in for nothing, which means the default plan costs the price of what you drink. The doček, the seeing-in, runs from mid evening to well past midnight, and the squares stay full long after the countdown.

Who plays on 31 December 2026

The first line-ups are in. Dubrovnik has booked Plavi orkestar for the Stradun, confirmed by mayor Mato Franković, and Pula's mayor Peđa Grbin announced Bajaga i Instruktori for the Forum, followed by Night Express (istrain.hr). Zadar puts Nina Badrić and BIG CroDance Party on Trg Petra Zoranića and Zaratino and Psihomodo Pop at the city market (City of Zadar). Opatija celebrates on the Mrkat, the town market: DJ Vedran plays from 21:00, Petar Grašo takes over at 23:00 and The Dellboys Band plays from 1:00 to 3:00 (City of Opatija). Zagreb, Split and Rijeka usually announce their acts in December.

How Croatia saw in 2026

On the last New Year's Eve Zagreb's free programme on Ban Jelačić Square, hosted by Martina Validžić, ran from Idem at 19:30 through Luzeri at 20:45 and Elemental at 22:00 to Dubioza kolektiv at 23:30 (Journal.hr). Split opened the Riva at 21:30 with Baby Lasagna, followed by Željko Bebek, with Vanillaz after midnight and a show of 190 drones over the harbour (Dalmacija Danas). Dubrovnik packed the Stradun for Jakov Jozinović at 21:00, Dino Merlin and, after midnight, Hiljson Mandela (The Dubrovnik Times).

The children's countdown at noon

Croatian cities run a second countdown for families on 31 December, at noon, with a children's programme on stage. Zagreb held its third one on 31 December 2025 from 11:30 on Trg Petra Preradovića, with a concert by Bojan Jambrošić and host Miro Čabraja (Journal.hr). The clock strikes twelve, confetti falls, and families are home by early afternoon. With small children, this is the version to plan around; it is made for local families.

What needs booking, and what is shut on 1 January

Restaurants sell New Year's Eve as a fixed menu with a set price and music, and the good ones are gone weeks ahead, so a table on the night is a decision to make in November. The 1st of January is the quietest day of the Croatian year: shops shut, most restaurants stay closed until evening, public transport runs a holiday timetable. Advent in Zagreb and Split runs to 7 January, so the first days of the year show both cities at their calmest.
