Rijeka to Trsat on foot: Korzo, 561 steps and the castle

The walk from Korzo to Trsat is short on a map but substantial in the legs. It begins on Rijeka's central promenade, crosses the older city toward Titov trg, then climbs the historic Petar Kružić Stairway to the Trsat sanctuary and continues to Trsat Castle. The official tourism board counts 561 steps on the full connection. That makes the route a deliberate climb, not a casual level stroll. Plan it for dry or settled weather, wear shoes that hold on polished stone and carry water. If the steps do not suit everyone in the group, keep the city centre section and use the official bus network for Trsat instead.

Use Korzo as orientation rather than a box to tick. The tourism board describes it as Rijeka's main promenade and civic meeting place, framed by façades, fountains and the City Tower. Walk east at an unhurried pace and let the dense centre change around you. Your target is the northwest corner of Titov trg. There, a small Baroque passage chapel with a relief of the Madonna and Child marks the beginning of the Petar Kružić Stairway. This is the useful decision point. Check the stone, the weather and the group before starting. A wet staircase, limited mobility, a stroller or tired knees are good reasons to choose the bus fallback without treating it as a lesser visit.

The stairway began in 1531 by order of the Croatian warlord Petar Kružić and grew over later centuries, with votive chapels added along the ascent. Do not attack all 561 steps at one speed. Pause without blocking the passage, look back as the city drops away and keep enough energy for Trsat itself. At the top, the route reaches the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat and its Franciscan monastery. Respect worship and pilgrimage activity, particularly around major religious dates. From the sanctuary area, continue through Trsat toward the castle. This upper section is a walk between neighbourhood landmarks, not another long climb, and it gives the legs time to recover.

Finish at the castle, choose the descent honestly

Trsat Castle stands on a hill 138 metres above sea level. The official tourism description connects the site with prehistoric observation, Roman defence and the later medieval fortification, while its plateau opens views across Rijeka's old centre and the surrounding hills. Check the castle's own current visitor notice before entering because admission arrangements and event access can change. After the visit, decide again rather than automatically reversing the route. Descend the stairs only if the surface, light and knees are still comfortable. Otherwise use Autotrolej's official city-route information. Its network lists line 2 as Trsat to Srdoči, but consult the live route page and stop information for the correct direction instead of relying on a saved departure time.
