Every October, Ivanić-Grad decorates its streets with tonnes of pumpkins and lines Moslavačka ulica with pumpkin oil producers. Bučijada has run since 2004, Friday to Sunday on the first weekend of October. What to eat and buy, how to get there, the 2027 date status and the 2026 edition in review.
Checked: 20 October 2026, 20:00
Ivanić-Grad, about 40 km south-east of Zagreb, dresses its streets in pumpkins every October for Bučijada. The name comes from buča, the kajkavian word for pumpkin. The festival has run since 2004 and lasts three days, Friday to Sunday, on the first weekend of October. Oil producers line Moslavačka ulica, farmers fill the Maznica market, and bands play on Trg Vladimira Nazora every evening. The town's tourist board organises it and calls it the largest sales fair of pumpkin oil, pumpkins and pumpkin products in Croatia.
The 2026 edition, the 22nd, ran from 2 to 4 October with more than 300 exhibitors and about 15 tonnes of pumpkins as decoration. The fair, the concerts and the children's programme take place in open streets, squares and parks in the town centre. In 2026 the organiser listed no tickets or entry charges, and parking at the official car parks was free.

Bučijada 2027
As of 20 October 2026, the organisers have published no date for Bučijada 2027. The tourist board on tzig.hr and the town on ivanic-grad.hr list none yet. The last three editions followed the same pattern, Friday to Sunday on the first weekend of October:
- 2024: the 20th Bučijada, Friday 4 to Sunday 6 October, as reported by Index.hr.
- 2025: the 21st Bučijada, Friday 3 to Sunday 5 October, as reported by Turističke priče.
- 2026: the 22nd Bučijada, Friday 2 to Sunday 4 October, as announced by the Ivanić-Grad tourist board and the town.
These dates show a pattern, and the 2027 date still needs official confirmation. In 2026 the date was public by 24 July, when Index.hr reported it, and the full programme followed on 21 September. The tourist board posts its news on tzig.hr and on the festival's Instagram account, @bucijadaivanic. Other dates already fixed for next year are in our Croatia 2027 festival calendar.
Pumpkin oil leads the fair
Pumpkin seed oil is the reason the fair exists. In recent editions the oil producers have stood together in Moslavačka ulica, so you can taste your way along one street. In 2026 there were 40 of them. Around them you find roasted seeds, spreads and whole pumpkins. Farm producers fill the Maznica market and Trg Berislava Kezele, and craft stalls line Ulica kralja Tomislava.
The food stalls sell the pumpkin in every form. Bučnica is a pie of thin dough with grated pumpkin and fresh cheese, best bought warm and eaten standing up. Bučokremšnita is a pumpkin take on the custard slice. Pumpkin soup, pumpkin risotto, pumpkin beer and pralines filled with pumpkin spread return year after year. In 2025 the list included pumpkin ajvar, in 2026 pumpkin ice cream made to an Italian gelato recipe. Koštice, roasted and salted seeds, are eaten by the handful at the concerts.

A spoonful of green oil on the plate
Pumpkin seed oil is a finishing oil. It is pressed from roasted seeds, which gives it the dark green colour, the nutty taste and a low smoke point. Cooks in Moslavina keep it for cold dishes. A spoonful goes over the food on the plate, and the usual pairings are listed below.
| Dish | How it is served |
|---|---|
| Green salad | Oil, vinegar, salt and sliced raw onion |
| Fresh cottage cheese | Oil and a pinch of paprika, with bread |
| Bean salad | Cooked beans, onion, vinegar and a generous pour of oil |
| Pumpkin soup | A swirl added at the table, never in the pot |
| Vanilla ice cream | A spoonful over the top, the Styrian way |

Buying oil to take home
The label tells you most of what you need. Bučino ulje, often written as 100% bučino ulje, is pure pumpkin seed oil. Bučino salatno ulje is a blend with sunflower or another cheap oil, sold cheaper, and it tastes thinner. Good oil looks almost black in the bottle and shows a red tint when you pour a thin layer on a white plate. Ask whether the seeds come from golica, the hull-less pumpkin bred for oil, and when the oil was pressed. It keeps for about a year in a dark bottle away from heat and light, and once opened it belongs in the fridge or a cool cupboard. The usual bottle holds 500 ml.
- Taste before you buy. The producers pour samples, and the differences between stalls are real.
- Bring cash in small notes. Many sellers are family farms, marked OPG on their signs, and not every stall takes cards.
- If you fly home, the bottle goes in checked luggage, wrapped in a plastic bag, because the oil stains fabric.
- Roasted seeds, koštice, weigh little, need no fridge and make the easier gift for people at home.
- Leave the whole pumpkins for the locals unless you are driving home within Croatia. They do not travel well.
What returns every year
The programme changes each year, and its main parts return. The sales fair opens in the morning and runs until 20:00 on all three days. The evening concerts take place on the main stage on Trg Vladimira Nazora, with the headliner at 20:00 in 2026. Recent headliners were Jelena Rozga, Jole and Tony Cetinski in 2024, Frajle, Mullahani and Doris Dragović in 2025, and Miroslav Škoro, Urban&4 and Magazin in 2026.
- Buča od sjemenke do ulja: a talk session on pumpkin oil on the Friday. The town, the Croatian pumpkin oil producers' association and the development agency IGRA organise it, and it ends with a pumpkin snack.
- Buče & cvijeće: florists build pumpkin and flower arrangements in front of visitors, and the winners are announced on the Saturday.
- Mala Bučijada: the children's festival in Sportski park Zelenjak, a few minutes' walk from the centre.
- A mushroom exhibition by the mushroom society GD Crveni Peharček at the Maznica market. In 2026 it was the 13th.
- Folklore groups, wind orchestras and street musicians during the day, plus pumpkin decorations and photo corners in Park hrvatskih branitelja and along the Lonja.

Mala Bučijada for children
Mala Bučijada fills Sportski park Zelenjak with workshops, plays, inflatables and games. Recent programmes included pumpkin cream slice eating contests, sack races, hobby-horse races, a laundry-hanging race and a tombola draw. Selo buča, a storytelling session followed by a workshop, has been part of it since at least 2024. Food and drink stands in the park make Zelenjak a base for families for the whole day.
Getting there from Zagreb
By car, take the A3 motorway east from Zagreb and leave at the Ivanić-Grad exit. The town puts the drive at about 35 minutes. The centre lies roughly 40 km from central Zagreb and 36 km from Zagreb airport. During the festival the town closes the central streets to traffic. In 2026 the closure ran from Thursday 06:00 to Monday 15:00. Free car parks open around the centre. In 2026 there were ten, with about 630 spaces, 5 to 20 minutes on foot from the fair.
By train, regular HŽPP services run from Zagreb Glavni kolodvor to Ivanić-Grad in 40 to 60 minutes. The station in Kolodvorska ulica is 5 to 10 minutes on foot from the fair. Weekend trains are fewer. In 2026 the last train back left Ivanić-Grad at 21:07 on Friday and Saturday and at 21:55 on Sunday. In 2024 and 2025 HŽPP also ran the Bučko-express, a festival train from Zagreb. The current timetable and any festival train are listed on hzpp.hr.
By bus, Čazmatrans runs from Zagreb bus station to Ivanić-Grad in about 40 minutes. Weekend buses are few, and in 2026 the last ones back left in the afternoon and early evening. For the evening concerts, the simplest plans are a car with a driver who stays sober or a bed in town.

Where to stay
Ivanić-Grad has a small stock of beds. The tourist board's accommodation list includes Hotel Sport, the Naftalan health resort, which takes guests as well as patients, the Kezele farm stay and a handful of apartments and holiday houses. Some are a few minutes' walk from the main square, others lie in the villages around the town. A room in town lets you stay until the last concert ends. With a base in Zagreb, plan the day around the train times.
Ivanić-Grad in short
Ivanić-Grad lies on the Lonja river in the south-east of Zagreb County, where Turopolje, Posavina and Moslavina meet. The town grew out of a fortress built in the middle of the 16th century against the Ottomans, a square Renaissance stronghold with bastions and a moat that was part of the Military Frontier. Nothing of it survives: Park hrvatskih branitelja, where the Bučijada sets out its pumpkin decorations, stands on the site of the old fortress, and the parish church of St Peter was built in 1831 in neo-baroque style. The fair takes its name from buča, the kajkavian word for pumpkin. Today the town is also known for Naftalan, a special hospital for medical rehabilitation that treats skin and joint conditions with naphthalan, a medicinal mineral oil. According to the hospital, the deposit here is the only one of its kind in Europe and only the second known in the world. The other is in Azerbaijan.

Nearby
Kloštar Ivanić, about 5 km to the north, is the older settlement and was the centre of medieval Ivanić. Its Franciscan church of St John the Baptist, completed in 1508, is one of the largest Gothic churches in inland Croatia, with the monastery beside it. Čazma, about 20 km to the north-east, has the church of St Mary Magdalene, a 13th century building on a low hill and one of the oldest churches in inland Croatia. With a car, the Moslavina wine road runs along the southern slopes of Moslavačka gora around Popovača and Voloder, about 30 km east along the A3, where the cellars pour škrlet, a light white grape grown almost nowhere else. South-east of the town the Lonja flows on towards Lonjsko polje, the nature park on the Sava floodplain with wooden villages and the storks of Čigoč. In October the storks have gone south and the meadows are often under water. The drive to Čigoč takes a little over an hour.
Practical notes
Early October in the Sava lowlands usually brings mild afternoons and cool evenings. At Zagreb-Maksimir, the nearest long-term station of the national weather service DHMZ, October averages 11 °C, with rain on about ten days and fog on about seven. Bring a warm layer for the evening concerts and something for the rain. Croatia uses the euro, and there are cash machines in the centre, but carry small notes for the farm stalls. The words you need are bučino ulje for the oil, koštice for the seeds and koliko košta for the price. More are in our Croatian phrase list.

Bučijada 2026 in review
The 22nd Bučijada ran from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 October 2026. The town counted more than 300 exhibitors, 40 of them oil producers, and decorated the centre with about 15 tonnes of pumpkins. A throne of the autumn queen stood in the centre for photos. The new item on the menu was pumpkin ice cream, made to an Italian gelato recipe.
Mayor Javor Bojan Leš called the opening day the strongest Friday so far, with more exhibitors than ever before. Tourist board director Ana Gašparović reported many organised coach groups and 70 students from a Zagreb hotel and tourism school who arrived by train. Interior minister Davor Božinović visited on behalf of the prime minister. He said an estimate of 70,000 visitors over the festival days looked realistic to him.

On Friday the festival opened with the talk session Buča od sjemenke do ulja. Tihomir Moslavac spoke on stabilising cold-pressed pumpkin oil with antioxidants, Srećko Valić on how heat and radiation affect seeds, oil and press cake. That evening Kings, Miroslav Škoro and Svetinja played the main stage. Saturday brought the official opening at 11:00, the Buče & cvijeće results, Neki to vole vruće, Urban&4 and a DJ set by Nick Bane & Matyma. On Sunday the kum, the festival's honorary godfather, arrived at 12:00. Mario Valentić led a Pumpkin Workout, and Spice Grills and Magazin closed the festival.
Rail works between Sesvete, Dugo Selo and Vrbovec ran all weekend, with single-track working, delays and some cancelled trains. The centre stayed closed to traffic from Thursday morning to Monday afternoon. Fine weather helped the Friday crowds, the mayor said.
