Dubrovnik to Bari ferry 2026: timetable, prices, cancellation, alternatives

The overnight ferry from Dubrovnik to Bari is the only sea link between the south of Croatia and Italy: Jadrolinija's line 54, sailed by the car ferry Dalmacija, ten hours across the Adriatic with a cabin or a reclining seat and the sunrise over Puglia. In 2026 it has a problem. A technical fault on the Dalmacija stopped the line on 16 August, it ran again briefly, and on 8 September Jadrolinija cancelled all sailings on its three Italian routes until 21 October, which is one day after the last scheduled departure of the season. This guide gives the timetable and prices as published for 2026, what the cancellation means for a ticket you hold, the alternatives from Dubrovnik to Italy this autumn, and what to expect in 2027.

The route and the ship

Line 54 leaves Gruž harbour, 3 kilometres from the Old Town, in the evening and reaches Bari's port on the Italian side the next morning; the return leaves Bari in the evening and arrives in Dubrovnik in the morning. The Dalmacija is a car ferry built in the nineties with two-berth and four-berth cabins, reclining seats, a restaurant, a bar and a car deck. Check-in for foot passengers opens two hours before departure at the Jadrolinija office in the port building, cars need to be in the lane an hour and a half before. On the Italian side Bari's port is a fifteen-minute walk from the old town and the station, with trains to Rome in four hours and to Lecce in ninety minutes.

Timetable 2026 as published

Departure is at 22:00 from Dubrovnik and arrival in Bari at about 08:00 the next morning; from Bari the ferry leaves at 22:00 and docks in Dubrovnik at about 08:00. Times shift by an hour on some dates, so the ticket, not this table, is the authority. The line does not run from November to April.

Prices in 2026

Fares are lower in May, June, September and October than in July and August, and return tickets are sold as two singles. Booking is on Jadrolinija's own site or app, where the cabin and vehicle categories are shown per sailing, or through the ferry agencies, which add a fee. In July and August cabins sell out two to three weeks ahead; the deck passage rarely does.

The cancellation: what happened and what you are owed

On 16 August 2026 the Dalmacija was taken out of service in Dubrovnik with a technical fault and the line was suspended until further notice. Sailings resumed for a short period, and at noon on 8 September Jadrolinija announced that because of the same technical problem all sailings on lines 53 Split to Ancona, 54 Dubrovnik to Bari and 56 Split to Bari were cancelled until 21 October 2026. Since the season's last Dubrovnik departure was scheduled for 20 October, the notice in effect ends the 2026 season on the Bari route unless the company announces extra sailings, which it had not done by mid-September.

A ticket for a cancelled sailing is covered by EU Regulation 1177/2010 on passenger rights by sea: you can choose a full refund within seven days or re-routing at no extra cost, and if the operator did not inform you at least a week before departure you are also entitled to compensation of 25 to 50 percent of the fare for the delay, depending on the length of the voyage. Refunds go through the channel you booked with, Jadrolinija's site for direct bookings and the agency for agency bookings. Keep the cancellation notice and the booking confirmation.

Alternatives from Dubrovnik to Italy this autumn

• Fly. Croatia Airlines and the Italian carriers fly from Dubrovnik to Rome and from Split to Rome and Milan in the summer schedule, which runs to late October, from about 90 euro one way. Ryanair connects Zadar with several Italian cities into October.
• The Bar to Bari crossing from Montenegro. A seasonal ferry runs between Bar, three hours south of Dubrovnik by bus, and Bari; it is a separate operator and its own timetable, so check it for your date before you buy the bus ticket.
• Drive round. Dubrovnik to Bari by road is Split, the Slovenian motorway, Trieste and the whole length of Italy, about 1,400 kilometres and fifteen hours. It makes sense only with a car you need on the other side, and even then Split to Ancona by sea would have been the answer.
• Wait for 2027. The line normally reopens in May; Jadrolinija publishes the next year's international timetable in the winter.

What to expect on board when it runs

The Dalmacija is functional rather than pretty. Cabins are small, clean and air-conditioned, with a shower in the outside cabins; the reclining seats are in a large lounge that gets loud and cold, so a blanket and earplugs are the deck passenger's kit. The restaurant serves a set dinner for about 15 euro and breakfast for 8; the bar sells coffee and sandwiches through the night. Cars are parked tightly and inaccessible during the crossing, so take everything you need for the night into the passenger decks. The crossing is smooth in summer and rough on a jugo night in autumn; the ship sails in most weather and the delays, when they come, are at departure.
