Dubrovnik limits itself to 2 cruise ships and about 8,000 passengers a day, and on those days the Old Town still feels full between 10:00 and 15:00. The port is Gruž, a working harbour 3 km north-west of the walls, where ferries to Bari and the Elaphiti islands also leave. Tenders are rare; almost every ship goes alongside. The whole day comes down to 3 decisions: how you cover the 3 km, whether you walk the walls, and when you go back.

The bus is the honest answer for most people: cheap, frequent and it drops you at Pile Gate, the western entrance where the walls circuit starts. Buy the ticket from the driver with small notes or coins. Taxis queue at the terminal and are fine for 4 people; the meter price to Pile is about 12 euro, but drivers quote flat 20 euro on busy mornings.
The walls, Lovrijenac and the cable car
The city walls ticket costs 40 euro for adults in 2026 and includes Fort Lovrijenac outside Pile Gate, valid 72 hours, one circuit only. The walk is just under 2 km with about 1,000 steps in total and takes 90 minutes at cruise pace; in July and August start at 08:00 or after 16:00, at midday the stone radiates heat and the queue at Pile can take 30 minutes. The cable car to Mount Srđ costs about 27 euro return, the ride is 4 minutes, and the view covers the Old Town, Lokrum and the Elaphiti islands. If the ship leaves at 17:00, do the walls first and the cable car after 14:00, when the morning groups have gone.
Three plans by hours ashore
- 5 hours: bus to Pile, walls circuit, Stradun and the Old Port, lunch off the main street, bus back. Budget 40 euro walls plus 4 euro bus.
- 7 hours: as above, plus the cable car after lunch or a swim at Banje beach, 10 minutes east of the Old Port.
- 9 hours: walls at opening, the boat to Lokrum from the Old Port for the botanical garden and the swimming rocks, back for the cable car at sunset if the ship sails late.
Two things cruise passengers regret most often: paying for a ship excursion that is the same bus ride for 4 times the price, and leaving the Old Town at the same time as everyone else. Walk back to the bus at Pile by 15:30 at the latest for a 17:00 sailing; the terminal is 15 minutes away but the line at the stop grows fast. Toilets are free in the port terminal and cost 1 euro in the Old Town.
Eating, swimming and money in a short call
Lunch on the Stradun costs 30 to 40 euro a head for average food; two streets up, on Prijeko's side lanes and around the Rupe museum, the same money buys a proper plate of grilled squid or black risotto. The green market on Gundulić square sells figs, candied orange peel and cheese until about 13:00 and is the cheapest lunch in town. For a swim, Buža is the bar on the rocks outside the southern walls, reached through a hole in the wall signposted cold drinks; Banje beach is 10 minutes east of the Old Port with sunbeds at 20 to 30 euro a pair. Croatia uses the euro, cards work everywhere in the Old Town, and the only cash you need is 2 euro coins for the bus and the toilet.
How busy will it be: reading the ship schedule
The Dubrovnik Port Authority publishes the cruise calendar, and the number of ships in port on your day decides the experience more than the season does. One ship of 2,000 passengers on a Tuesday in October is a calm walk; two ships of 4,000 each on a Saturday in July fill the Stradun wall to wall from 10:00 to 15:00. If you are on the second ship, reverse the plan: cable car first while everyone queues at Pile, walls after 15:00 when the first ship's passengers head back. On days with a single ship in port, the walls at 08:00 are yours for an hour.
- Tender days are rare but happen when a third ship arrives: the tender lands at the Old Port itself, which saves the bus but adds queues on the way back to the ship.
- Wheelchairs and strollers: the Stradun is flat, the walls are not; the cable car and Lokrum are the accessible views.
- Luggage storage is not needed for a port call, but if you disembark here for good, the lockers at the bus station in Gruž cost about 5 euro a day.
- Sailaway views: the best photographs of the walls from the water are taken from the top deck 20 minutes after departure, when the ship passes Lokrum.
