Dubrovnik in October 2026: weather, crowds, what is open, prices

Dubrovnik in October is the city the postcards were taken in, minus most of the people who bought them. The afternoons still reach 21 degrees, the sea in front of Banje beach is 20 degrees in the first half of the month, the walls are open until six, and the cruise ships thin out week by week. It is also the month when the last catamaran to Split leaves, the Lokrum boats stop and the first jugo storm turns the Stradun into a river for an afternoon. Here is how to plan it, from a first-time visitor's point of view.

Weather in Dubrovnik in October

October in Dubrovnik is warm because the city faces south and the sea behind it is the warmest water in the country. Most days start with a clear sky and a light breeze, the afternoon is t-shirt weather in the sun and sweater weather in the shade of the walls, and the evening wants a jacket. Rain comes on the jugo, the warm wind from the south-east, in blocks of one to three days, and it is heavy: the drainage on the Stradun is built for it. Between the storms you get the clearest views of the year from Srđ. The clocks go back on 25 October, and from then on dinner is a night-time affair.

Crowds and cruise days

October is still a cruise month, but a shrinking one. In the first half there are ships on most weekdays, often two, occasionally three on the same day, which means 6,000 to 9,000 extra people between ten in the morning and four in the afternoon. In the second half most days have one ship or none. The pattern is the same as in summer: the Old Town fills from Pile Gate inwards between ten and two, and empties by five. The difference in October is that the rest of the day is genuinely quiet, and the evening Stradun belongs to the residents and the hotel guests.

• Check the port authority's ship schedule for your dates, it is public and accurate to the hour.
• On a two-ship day, do the walls at opening at eight, then leave the Old Town for Lokrum, the cable car or Cavtat until four.
• On a no-ship day, do the opposite: walls at eleven, when the light is best on the roofs, and a long lunch inside the walls.
• Museum passes and the walls ticket stay at the high-season price of 40 euro until 31 October, then drop to 15 euro in November.

What is open in October, and until when

Nothing that a visitor needs closes in October. The restaurants inside the walls that close for winter do so in November or December. Hotels on the Lapad peninsula are open and cheaper, with a good 4-star double at 110 to 150 euro against 250 to 350 in August. Apartments in the Old Town drop by a third.

Swimming in October

Locals swim in Dubrovnik until the end of October and some all year. For a visitor from Britain or the northern United States the sea in the first two weeks, at 20 to 21 degrees, is easily warm enough. Banje beach below the Ploče gate is the closest and has the view, Sveti Jakov beach twenty minutes east is quieter and catches the afternoon sun until later, and the rocks at Buža, the bar outside the southern walls, are the classic place for a swim and a beer. Lokrum's rocky coves and its small salt lake, the Dead Sea, are warmer than the open coast. After a jugo storm the water is murky for a day, so swim before the rain, not after.

Day trips that still work in October

This is the best month for the trips out of town. Buses to Kotor run four to five times a day, the border at Debeli Brijeg takes minutes instead of the summer hour, and the bay of Kotor has the soft light of autumn. Mostar is three hours by bus and the old bridge is walkable without a queue. Cavtat is 25 minutes on bus 10 for 4 euro or 45 minutes by boat, and its promenade is at its best with the summer crowds gone. Ston's walls and the oysters of Mali Ston are an easy half day, and the Pelješac wine cellars are in the middle of harvest. Korčula by catamaran is possible until 31 October. What to do when it rains

• The Rector's Palace and the Maritime Museum, both on the museum pass, together take a comfortable three hours.
• The Franciscan monastery's pharmacy, one of the oldest working ones in Europe, and its cloister, twenty minutes and 8 euro.
• War Photo Limited on Antuninska street, the most serious museum in the city, closes for winter in November.
• A long lunch at a konoba in Gruž, where prices are a third lower than inside the walls and the fish comes off the morning market.
• The cable car on a clearing afternoon: after a jugo front passes, the visibility from Srđ reaches the Montenegrin coast.

Prices in October compared with August

Where to stay in October

October is the month to stay inside the walls, because the reason not to, the noise and the heat of the summer crowds, is gone. Old Town apartments that cost 220 euro in August go for 120 to 150, and you wake to a street that belongs to the residents until the first ship group arrives at ten. If you want a pool and a beach on the doorstep, the hotels on the Lapad peninsula and around Sveti Jakov are open all month with the same 30 to 40 percent discount, and bus 4 or 6 reaches Pile Gate in twelve minutes. Cavtat is the quiet alternative, 25 minutes away by bus 10, with hotel doubles from 90 euro and a boat to the city in the morning.

Events and dates in October 2026

• First half of October: the last outdoor concerts of the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra season in the Rector's Palace atrium, tickets 15 to 30 euro.
• Sunday 25 October: clocks go back one hour, sunset moves to about 17:10.
• Late October: the Konavle grape harvest in the villages south of Cavtat, with the small wineries open for tastings on weekends.
• 1 November, All Saints' Day: a public holiday, shops closed, the Boninovo cemetery lit with candles the evening before, which is worth a walk.
• Throughout: the port authority's cruise calendar, the only date list that changes your day.

A three-day October plan

Day one: walls at eight, coffee at Gradska kavana, Rector's Palace, lunch in the Old Town, cable car at five for the sunset at about half past six early in the month. Day two: Lokrum in the morning with a swim, Banje in the afternoon, dinner in Gruž. Day three: bus 10 to Cavtat, the promenade to the Račić mausoleum, boat back to the Old Port at four, a last walk on the Stradun after the ships have gone. If a storm hits, swap day three for the museums and the pharmacy, and go to Cavtat on the day after, when the sky is scrubbed clean.
