Advent 2026: dates and main locations

Advent Zagreb 2026 runs from Saturday 28 November 2026 to Thursday 7 January 2027, the official site adventzagreb.hr says. During a warm-up from 25 to 27 November the locations may already open, according to the City of Zagreb. Entry to the squares and parks is free. The main locations sit in the Lower Town and the Upper Town: Ban Jelačić Square with the Manduševac fountain, Zrinjevac park, Strossmayer Square, King Tomislav Square with the Ledeni park ice rink, European Square, Kvaternik Square, and the Strossmayer promenade and Plato Gradec above the city. The 2026 programme and opening hours are not yet published. In 2025 the city presented the programme on 13 November. Stages, hours and prices are collected on Advent in Zagreb 2026.

By train from Vienna, Graz, Munich, Salzburg and Villach

The ÖBB journey planner shows one direct train from Vienna on Friday 4 December 2026. EuroCity 79 leaves Vienna Hbf at 15:53, calls at Graz at 18:28 and reaches Zagreb Glavni kolodvor at 22:20. That is 6 hours 27 minutes from Vienna and 3 hours 52 minutes from Graz. An earlier option leaves Vienna at 10:53 with one change to EuroCity 115 and arrives at 19:20. The other daytime connections that Friday need two or three changes, mostly in Maribor or Zidani Most.

From Munich, EuroCity 115 runs through to Zagreb. It leaves Munich Hbf at 10:16, Salzburg at 12:07 and Villach at 14:45, crosses Slovenia via Jesenice and Dobova and arrives in Zagreb at 19:20. The full ride takes 9 hours 4 minutes. For Saturday 5 December the ÖBB planner marks this train as a heavy travel day, with a seat guaranteed only with a reservation. From Villach, the D 319 also leaves at 18:38 and arrives at 23:00.

The night train EuroNight reaches Zagreb at 10:30, which leaves a full first day. It leaves Salzburg at 02:10 and Villach at 06:06 as a through train. From Munich Hbf the planner shows a departure at 23:51 with one change.

For the return on Sunday 6 December, EuroCity 78 leaves Zagreb at 07:06 and reaches Vienna at 14:07, direct. Later trains to Vienna that day need two to five changes. To Munich, EuroCity 214 leaves at 08:16 and connects in Villach to EuroCity 114, arriving at 17:42. EuroNight 414 leaves Zagreb at 19:39 and reaches Munich Hbf at 05:49 with one change. Times shift by a minute or more later in the month: for Friday 18 December the planner shows EuroCity 79 arriving at 22:21.

By air: who flies to Zagreb in winter 2026/27

Croatia Airlines flies three times a day from Frankfurt and twice a day from Munich, Vienna and Zurich in the winter schedule, ExYU Aviation reported on 7 October 2026. Lufthansa flies once a day from Frankfurt and twice a day from Munich from the start of the winter schedule on 25 October. Austrian Airlines flies daily from Vienna until 10 January 2027 and then ends the route. Eurowings flies from Stuttgart twice a week in November and December; the route pauses from 11 January to 26 February. Ryanair flies five times a week from Weeze on the Lower Rhine.

For Düsseldorf, Cologne, Berlin and Hamburg we found no published Zagreb winter schedule by 23 October 2026. In summer 2026 the Zagreb Airport timetable also listed Cologne with Eurowings and Basel, Memmingen and Karlsruhe with Ryanair. The airport has not yet put its winter timetable online. Travellers from Switzerland fly direct from Zurich with Croatia Airlines.

By long-distance bus

FlixBus runs ten trips a day from Munich to Zagreb, according to its route page. Buses leave the central bus station at Arnulfstraße 21, and the fastest trip takes 7 hours 20 minutes. From Vienna there are also ten trips a day, the fastest in 4 hours 50 minutes, with stops including the Erdberg bus terminal (VIB). Both lines end at Zagreb bus station, Avenija Marina Držića 4. The airport shuttle stops there too.

By car: route, vignettes, winter tyres, parking

From Vienna the route follows the A2 to Graz, crosses into Slovenia at Spielfeld and Šentilj, passes Maribor and joins the Croatian A2 at Macelj. From Munich it runs via Salzburg, the Tauern motorway, Villach, the Karawanken tunnel and Ljubljana to the Obrežje and Bregana crossing, then on the A3 into Zagreb. Austria and Slovenia require a vignette, and the Tauern and Karawanken tunnels charge a section toll on top. Prices and where to buy them are in our guide to vignettes and tolls.

Croatia requires winter equipment on listed road sections from 15 November to 15 April, on 839.2 km of motorway, the Croatian Auto Club HAK says. The list includes the A2 from Macelj and the A3 from Bregana, so both routes into Zagreb fall under the rule. Tyres, chains and fines are on our page about the winter tyre rule.

Zagreb charges street parking by zone. In zone I in the centre an hour costs 1.60 euros, for a maximum of 2 hours, charged from 07:00 to 24:00 on weekdays and Saturdays and from 07:00 to 15:00 on Sundays and holidays. Zone II costs 0.70 euros an hour for up to 3 hours, zone III 0.30 euros an hour with no limit, and both are free on Sundays. For a weekend the city garages are simpler: Tuškanac (Tuškanac 1b, 465 spaces) and Langov trg (Trg Josipa Langa 13, 305 spaces) charge 1.60 euros an hour by day, 0.80 euros at night and 13.30 euros for 24 hours, Zagrebparking says. The 24-hour ticket has to be requested within 10 minutes of driving in.

From the airport into town

The Pleso prijevoz shuttle runs every 30 minutes between Franjo Tuđman Airport and Zagreb bus station. The ride takes 35 to 40 minutes, the airport says, and a one-way ticket costs 9 euros in the operator's online shop, which sends a fiscal PDF with a QR code. ZET city bus 290 runs from the airport to Kvaternik Square in 45 to 50 minutes; the square is one of the Advent locations. Taxi prices and the other Croatian airports are on our page from the airport to the city.

Getting around Zagreb: tram, tickets, funicular

Trams cover the centre. A ZET single ticket valid for 30 minutes costs 0.53 euros at a kiosk and 0.80 euros from the driver. Sixty minutes cost 0.93 and 1.33 euros, ninety minutes 1.33 and 1.99 euros. A day ticket costs 3.98 euros, a three-day ticket 9.29 euros and a night ticket 1.99 euros. The funicular up to the Upper Town costs 0.66 euros a ride. These fares apply inside the City of Zagreb; for trips across the city line, such as bus 290 to Velika Gorica, ZET lists separate fares. Most Advent locations are a walk apart: from the main station the way runs north through the parks to Ban Jelačić Square.

Where to stay: three areas

Three areas work for an Advent weekend. The Lower Town, Donji grad, between the main station and Ilica, holds Zrinjevac, Strossmayer Square, King Tomislav Square and European Square. Eight of the ten 2025 locations lay within a 15-minute walk of Ban Jelačić Square, our Advent page notes. The streets around the main station put you next to the Ledeni park and the trains home, and the bus station with the airport shuttle is a short tram ride away. The Upper Town, Gornji grad, holds the Strossmayer promenade and Plato Gradec and goes quiet late; the funicular and the stairways lead down. Rooms within walking distance of Zrinjevac go early for the December weekends.

Two days at Advent: a plan

Saturday. The night train arrives at 10:30, or EuroCity 115 the evening before at 19:20. Leave the bags and walk north through the parks to Ban Jelačić Square. Dolac market sits on the terrace behind it and closes at 15:00 on Saturdays. In the early afternoon take the funicular to the Upper Town for the Strossmayer promenade and Plato Gradec while it is light. Come down for the evening on Zrinjevac, which in 2024 stayed open until 23:00 at weekends, and finish at Fuliranje on Strossmayer Square.

Sunday. Start at European Square and Kvaternik Square, then skate at the Ledeni park in front of the main station. Rail travellers have short walks from there. EuroNight 414 towards Munich leaves at 19:39 and fits a full Sunday. For Vienna the direct EuroCity 78 leaves at 07:06; later trains that day need two to five changes, and FlixBus also runs the route.

Weather in December

The state weather service DHMZ gives a December mean of 2.2 degrees at its Zagreb Grič station, for the years 1861 to 2024. On 15 December days on average the temperature drops below zero, snow falls on 5 days, rain on 9, and fog lies on 11. The sun shines for 51.2 hours across the whole month. The deepest December snow cover measured there reached 53 cm. Evenings on Zrinjevac call for warm shoes, a hat and gloves.

Practical: euro, busy weekends, evening hours

Croatia has paid in euros since 1 January 2023, the European Commission says. Entry to the Advent squares is free; stalls set their own prices for food and drink. The December weekends are the busy days, and the ÖBB planner already flags trains to Zagreb on Saturday 5 December as a heavy travel day. In 2024 Zrinjevac opened from 12:00 to 23:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 to 23:00 at weekends; the 2026 hours are not yet out. The tourist board's visitor centre at Ban Jelačić Square 11 opens Monday to Friday 08:30 to 20:30 and at weekends 09:00 to 20:00, adventzagreb.hr says. 25 and 26 December, 1 January and 6 January are public holidays in Croatia.
