Plitvice Lakes is 16 lakes stepping down a forested valley over travertine barriers, linked by 8 km of wooden boardwalks, an electric boat and a shuttle train. It is Croatia's most visited park and the one most often done badly: arriving at 11:00 in August with the buses, walking the same 2 km as everyone else, leaving at 14:00. The fix is timing, and both Zagreb and Split are close enough to get it right in a day.

A car wins on flexibility and, for 2 or more people, on price: from Split the tolls and fuel cost about 75 euro return for the car, against 50 euro per person on the bus. The bus works well from Zagreb, where the 06:30 or 07:30 departures put you at Entrance 1 before the crowds and the 16:00 or 17:00 return leaves time for the full loop. From Split the bus day is long, 4 hours each way, and the tour is only worth it if you do not want to drive at all.

The 4-hour route
Start at Entrance 1, the northern one, and go down to the Great Waterfall, 78 m and the park's tallest, then walk the lower lakes boardwalks upstream to the Kozjak lake jetty; that is 1 hour 30 with photo stops. Take the electric boat across Kozjak, 20 minutes, and walk the upper lakes loop, the quieter half with the wide travertine steps, another 1 hour 30. The shuttle train brings you back to the Entrance 1 area in 15 minutes. Programme B on the park map is this route; C adds the full upper lakes for 2 more hours. In summer the boat queue at Kozjak can eat 40 minutes at midday, another reason to be early or late.
- Wear real shoes: the boardwalks are wet and uneven, and the lower lakes path has 2 stair sections; strollers do not work, a carrier does.
- No swimming anywhere in the park, no drones, no leaving the boardwalks; the fines are real and the rangers are present.
- Food inside is limited to a few kiosks; bring water and lunch, or eat at the restaurants in Mukinje after the loop.

Sleeping nearby instead
If the schedule allows one night, sleep at the park and turn the day trip into two half days: arrive by 15:00, walk the lower lakes until closing when the boardwalks are empty, and do the upper lakes at 08:00 next morning before driving on; the ticket is valid for both days if bought as a 2-day ticket, 60 euro in summer. The villages of Mukinje and Jezerce, 2 km south of Entrance 2, have rooms from 70 euro; the park's own hotels at Entrance 2 are dated but 5 minutes from the boardwalks. Rastoke, a village of watermills on the Slunj river 30 km north, is the prettier stop for an evening and on the road back to Zagreb.
- Winter Plitvice, November to March, is frozen waterfalls and 10-euro tickets, but the upper lakes trail, the boats and the train close when there is ice; check the park's daily notice before driving up.
- Spring, April and May, has the most water and the greenest colours; autumn, late October, the beech forest turns and the crowds are gone.
- Dogs are allowed on a lead, drones are not, and the park fines both drone flying and leaving the boardwalks.
