European Best Destinations ranks Zagreb first among Christmas city breaks for 2026, and Time Out puts it top of Europe's winter city breaks, naming it the best choice for families. Advent Zagreb runs from 28 November to 7 January, right through New Year.
Checked: 4 November 2026, 18:39
Zagreb is number 1 on the 2026 list of the Best Christmas City Breaks in Europe published by the travel platform European Best Destinations (EBD). Geneva and Edinburgh follow, and Vienna is ninth. For visitors the calendar matters most: Advent Zagreb opens on Saturday 28 November 2026 and runs to Thursday 7 January 2027, the official site adventzagreb.hr says. Entry to the squares and parks is free.
The 2026 ranking
The top ten of the EBD list are Zagreb, Geneva, Edinburgh, Tallinn, Budapest, Brussels, Bath, Manchester, Vienna and Strasbourg. Prague is 13th and Dresden 14th. For Zagreb, EBD names the Upper Town, Zrinjevac Park, King Tomislav Square, European Square and the Grič Tunnel as the stages of Advent. The platform also recalls that Advent Zagreb was voted Europe’s best Christmas market three years in a row.

Time Out: first among winter city breaks
A second list followed at the end of October. The travel magazine Time Out puts Zagreb first among 11 cities in its guide to the best winter city breaks in Europe for 2026, ahead of Paris, Ljubljana and Sarajevo (Time Out). In its summary Time Out names Zagreb the best choice for families, Paris for couples, Edinburgh for food lovers and Ljubljana the most underrated city. The magazine singles out the award-winning Advent programme, the festive running race and the winter programme of galleries, theatres and concert halls.
Zagreb, Geneva, Vienna: the dates compared
| Rank | City and market | Dates | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Zagreb, Advent Zagreb | 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027 | Free entry, several squares and parks |
| 2 | Geneva, Noël au Quai | 19 November to 24 December 2026 | Free entry, Quai du Mont-Blanc by the lake |
| 9 | Vienna, Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz | 13 November to 26 December 2026, daily 10:00 to 22:00 | 24 December until 18:30; Eistraum ice rink until 6 January 2027 |
The biggest difference comes after Christmas. Geneva’s market ends on 24 December, according to Genève Tourisme, and the Vienna Christkindlmarkt closes on 26 December, with only the Eistraum ice rink on Rathausplatz staying open to 6 January. In Zagreb the stalls, stages and lights stay until 7 January. If you want to travel between Christmas and New Year or over New Year’s Eve, Zagreb is the only one of the three with the full market still running. The other way round, Vienna starts more than two weeks earlier: for lights and mulled wine in mid November, Vienna opens on 13 November and Geneva on 19 November.

Planning the trip
- Book a room early: rooms within walking distance of Zrinjevac go first on December weekends. Monday to Wednesday evenings and the first week after the opening are quieter. Neighbourhoods and travel are in our Advent weekend guide.
- Getting there: in the winter schedule Croatia Airlines flies twice daily from Vienna, Munich and Zurich and three times daily from Frankfurt. From Vienna, EuroCity 79 leaves at 15:53 and reaches Zagreb at 22:20.
- Costs: you pay at the stalls. In December 2025 a mulled wine in Zagreb cost 4 euros on average, tportal.hr found. Zagreb has no price caps in 2026, unlike Split, where 0.2 litres of mulled wine at the city stalls costs at most 3 euros.
- Holidays: 25 and 26 December, 1 January and 6 January are public holidays in Croatia. Stalls and museums may keep shorter hours on these days.
- Programme: stages and opening hours for 2026 are not published yet. In 2025 the city presented the programme on 13 November. Locations, the ice rink and last season’s hours are on our Advent Zagreb page.
Combining Zagreb with the coast
Zagreb is not the only Advent in Croatia. Rijeka, Opatija, Zadar, Split and Pula run their own markets on their own dates, and Split and Pula cap prices at the city stalls. If you want the sea after a weekend in the capital, all dates are in our coastal Advent overview.
