On 3 November Zagreb presented 1,000 more bikes, taking the Bajs fleet to about 3,000, with 20 new stations to come. What the new bike offers, how renting through the app works and when a single ride or the monthly pass makes sense for visitors.

On Tuesday 3 November 2026 Zagreb presented 1,000 more bikes for its Bajs bike share. Mayor Tomislav Tomašević showed the new bikes on Trg Stjepana Radića before his weekly press conference (index.hr). That takes the fleet to about 3,000 bikes, and 20 new stations are on the way (zagreb.info). For visitors Bajs remains one of the cheapest ways to get around the city: according to the operator, a ride of up to 30 minutes costs 0.50 euros (Bajs).

What changes on the bike

The new model has a darker finish and a sturdier frame meant to stand up better to vandalism. It also gets a more comfortable saddle, a larger basket and a phone holder. The number of bikes with a child seat rises from 200 to 400. The city is spreading the new stations across all of Zagreb, with fewer added in the dense centre. It plans to publish the map with every location by the end of November (zagreb.info).

According to the city, about 173,000 people use the system, roughly a quarter of residents. There have been more than 2.5 million rentals so far. The record came on 29 September with 28,000 rentals in a single day, the second day of the strike at the transport company ZET. The system's cargo bikes (Cargo Bajs) have been rented 500 times so far (zagreb.info).

How to rent a Bajs bike

  • Download the nextbike app and register for free. Activation costs a one-off 10 euros, which is added to your account as ride credit.
  • Scan the QR code on the bike and the frame lock opens by itself.
  • You can pause a ride in the app. The bike stays locked but rented, and the time keeps being charged.
  • Return the bike only to an official station shown in the app. Leaving it anywhere else costs 30 euros, and so can failing to close the lock.
  • You can reserve a bike for up to 10 minutes free of charge. Cancelling the reservation costs 0.50 euros.

All fares and fees are listed on the operator's website (Bajs).

What it means for visitors

For a city break the basic fare is enough. The 10 euros of activation credit cover 20 rides of up to 30 minutes each. Four short rides a day over a long Advent weekend add up to 12 rides in three days, or 6 euros. The 5-euro monthly pass includes any number of rides of up to 30 minutes, but 20 minutes must pass between two free rides. It pays off from the eleventh ride within 30 days and then renews automatically. If you are only in town for a few days, keep an eye on when the pass ends.

For longer trips and in rain or cold the tram remains the more comfortable choice (ZET). For short hops in the centre a bike is often enough. The map in the nextbike app and on the Bajs website shows the nearest stations. If you are coming for the Interliber book fair from 10 to 15 November or for Advent in Zagreb from 28 November, our Advent weekend in Zagreb covers getting there and where to stay, and the Zagreb page has the rest of the city.
