Split Pazar: a practical market breakfast and picnic guide

Pazar is the outdoor market pressed against the east wall of Diocletian's Palace and gathered around the Church of St Dominic. The Split Tourist Board calls it one of the central places of city life, filled with the colours, aromas and voices of a Dalmatian market. Treat it as a working market first and an attraction second. Walk one complete circuit before buying, notice what looks best that day and compare clearly displayed quantities. Availability changes with season and delivery, so this guide does not depend on a named stall, a promised product or a fixed price. The useful plan is breakfast now, then a small picnic for later.

Make two small meals, not one heavy bag

For breakfast, choose a portion you can eat soon and carry it away from the narrowest flow of shoppers. Whole fruit and other dry, shelf-stable foods make the simplest summer combination. Wash produce with safe water before eating and keep hands clean. For the later picnic, buy only what your route and storage can handle. The Croatian Agency for Agriculture and Food advises favouring dry, durable food or fruit for a beach or excursion. Sandwiches, dairy foods and other perishables need a portable cooler or thermal bag with cold packs. Buying more is not better if it spends the next hours warming in direct sun.

• First circuit: look before buying, keep entrances clear and do not stop the working aisle for a long photo session.
• Breakfast portion: choose something ready to eat soon, then step away from the stalls and find shade without blocking the church or palace passages.
• Picnic portion: prefer food that tolerates the route. Put anything perishable straight into a cooler bag with cold packs.
• Clean eating: wash whole produce with safe water, clean hands before eating and keep food protected from sand, insects and dirty surfaces.
• Finish well: take packaging and leftovers with you, separate rubbish where possible and leave your sitting place ready for the next person.

Let the market set the route, not the timetable

Pazar works because it is already beside the old city, not because you need to build a separate food expedition around it. Arrive from the eastern side of the palace, make the circuit, eat the small breakfast in a respectful place and continue your Split walk. Save the picnic only for a later shaded pause, and keep chilled food cold until then. Do not promise yourself a particular fruit, stall or bargain before arrival. The official description values the market for local atmosphere as much as for produce, and that atmosphere changes from one visit to the next.
