Makarska beyond the beach: Riva, Sveti Petar and Osejava

Makarska is often reduced to a long beach beneath Biokovo, but the city is easier to understand as three connected edges. The Riva and Kačić Square form the social centre, the Sveti Petar Peninsula closes one side of the harbour, and Osejava opens a darker forest route on the other. Walk those three first and the destination becomes more than a strip of sunbeds. You see how the mountain presses against the sea, how the harbour gives the town its shape and where the busy waterfront gives way to quieter paths.

Start with the town, not the sunbed

Begin at Kačić Square with St Mark's Co-Cathedral, then drift down to the Riva and harbour. The Franciscan Monastery and its Malacological Museum add a compact indoor stop when the heat is strongest. Continue around Sveti Petar Peninsula for views back across the harbour and toward Biokovo. The peninsula is close enough for an easy loop but separated enough from the cafés to change the mood. The church, stone remains, pines and small bathing points make it a better transition than walking straight from breakfast to the main beach.

• Choose Osejava for a shaded coastal walk and Nugal only if the group is comfortable with the walk there and back.
• Keep the main beach for convenience, but use Sveti Petar when you want a shorter swim close to the old centre.
• Treat Biokovo as a separate mountain plan and check official road, weather and access information before leaving.
• Return to the Riva after sunset, when the mountain silhouette and harbour lights explain Makarska better than midday glare.

Build a day with two temperatures

Use the bright morning for the centre and Sveti Petar, the hottest hours for a slow lunch, museum or swim, then walk Osejava when the light softens. This rhythm gives Makarska both of its personalities: an open resort waterfront and a rugged edge of pine, rock and mountain.
