Rain does not have to reduce Zagreb to cafés and shopping centres. The Upper Town holds three contrasting museums within a compact area: Zagreb City Museum on Opatička Street, the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art on Ćirilometodska Street and the Museum of Broken Relationships directly across the street. Treat them as a flexible sequence rather than a race. Begin only after checking each official visitor page for the date of your visit, because weekly closing days, holidays, temporary installations and last admission rules can differ. Once the museums are confirmed, the route keeps most of the day indoors and makes every outdoor transfer purposeful.

Start with the city, then narrow the lens

Start at Zagreb City Museum, Opatička 20. Founded in 1907, it uses objects and thematic displays to explain how Zagreb and its urban landscape developed. That context is useful at the beginning: later streets, façades and neighbourhood names become easier to read. Give the museum the largest block of time, but do not try to absorb every label. At Ćirilometodska 3, the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art changes the scale of the day. Its collection includes Croatian and international naïve, outsider and art brut works, with material spanning from the 1930s to the present. Focus on the visual language rather than trying to turn the visit into an art-history exam. Next, cross to the Museum of Broken Relationships at number 2. Its crowd-sourced objects and accompanying stories move from public history to private memory, while the Upper Town setting remains the same. The contrast is the route's strength: one stop explains a city, one explores self-taught artistic worlds, and one asks how ordinary belongings acquire emotional meaning.
