Rijeka is a working port that happens to have a beautiful centre, and one day on foot covers it without hurry. The route below runs about seven kilometres with one climb, the Trsat stairs; take it in this order and the light will be on the right things at the right time. Start at nine, and the day ends on the breakwater around six.
- 09:00The market pavilions and breakfast
Three iron-and-glass pavilions from 1880 to 1916 by the harbour: fish in the third, fruit and cheese in the first two, and the stalls outside selling burek from the ovens on the corner. This is where the city eats; our market guide has the details.
- 10:00Korzo and the city tower
The main street, laid out where the city walls stood, with the baroque city tower as its gate. Walk it end to end, sit at one of the cafés under the arcades, then pass through the tower into the old town behind it.
- 10:45Old town, the tunnel and the round cathedral
The Roman arch, the church of St Vitus with its unusual round plan, and the Rijeka tunnel, a 330-metre wartime shelter under the old town that is open to walk through for free. Come out at the lower end near the Kapucinska church with its two-storey facade.
- 12:30Lunch by the Rječina, then the 561 steps
Cross to the Delta side of the river for lunch, then start the Trsat stairs from the Titov trg: 561 steps built in 1531 for pilgrims, in shade most of the way, about twenty minutes up. Our Trsat stairs route breaks it down.
- 14:00Trsat: castle and sanctuary
The castle on the rock has the view over the whole bay and a café on the walls; the sanctuary across the square is the oldest Marian shrine in Croatia. Allow ninety minutes, and take bus 2 back down if the knees say so.
- 16:30The Molo longo at sunset
Back at the waterfront, walk the 1.7-kilometre breakwater out into the harbour: cranes on one side, Učka and the islands on the other, and the city lights coming on behind you. Dinner is on the Korzo or in one of the konobas of the Zagrad quarter.
If it rains, or if you have an hour more
Rijeka has more museums than a port town needs, and two are worth the detour: the Maritime and History Museum in the former Governor's Palace above the Korzo, for the ships and the Habsburg rooms, and Peek&Poke, a computer museum of the 1980s in a courtyard off the Korzo that children and their parents leave reluctantly. The Ivan Zajc theatre next to the market is the grandest building in the city; look inside if a rehearsal is not on. - For the centre, Trsat and the waterfront, yes: it is a compact city and this route is about seven kilometres. A second day goes to Opatija's Lungomare or the island of Krk, both under half an hour away.
- Where do I park in Rijeka?
- The garages at Delta by the bus station and under the Zagrad quarter are the easiest; the streets of the centre are metered zones with two-hour limits. Coming by train or bus, everything on this route starts within five minutes of the stations.
