Police say Saturday's wildfire above Seget near Trogir was started by sparks from an angle grinder that a man was using to cut reinforcing steel. About 25 hectares of grass, macchia and pine burned before crews localised the fire at 19:00. The man was arrested and faces a criminal complaint. Roads are open, and in the night to Monday only two firefighters were still on watch.

Status of the reports: Monday 5 October 2026, 13:15. The wildfire that broke out above Seget, the municipality just west of Trogir, on Saturday afternoon was caused by sparks from an electric angle grinder, according to the Split-Dalmatia police. About 25 hectares of grass, macchia and some pine forest burned before firefighters localised the fire at 19:00 the same evening. A small crew worked the burned ground on Sunday, and the roads around Trogir are open (Split-Dalmatia police, HVZ).
What the police found
According to the police statement issued on Monday, a 30-year-old citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina was cutting reinforcing steel with an electric grinder on open ground in Seget Gornji at about 14:35 on Saturday 3 October, and the tool threw off sparks he could not control. The man was arrested. Police will file a criminal complaint with the state attorney's office on suspicion that he negligently endangered life and property by a generally dangerous act or means (Split-Dalmatia police).
The final figures from the fire service
The national fire service report puts the first call at 14:42, for a fire at Put Vlaške in Seget Donji. In total 47 firefighters with 17 vehicles from the professional brigades of Trogir and Split and volunteer units from the Trogir, Kaštela and Split areas fought it, helped by two Canadair CL-415 water bombers (HVZ). The planes, requested at 15:00, worked over the fire from 15:44 until 17:07, and the D58 between Seget Donji and Seget Gornji reopened at 17:43 (Dalmacija Danas).
On Sunday six firefighters from the Seget Vranjica brigade with three vehicles kept up the watch and the mop-up, and in the night to Monday two of them were still on duty with one vehicle (HVZ, Dalmacija News). None of the official reports mention injuries or evacuations.
Metković: one fire localised, a new one at Vid
Saturday's second fire, in pine forest at Kula Norinska near Metković, was localised on Sunday. A new fire that broke out at 14:00 on Sunday on marshy ground at Vid was under control by the evening, after 30 firefighters, helped by four Canadairs, had defended the houses (HVZ, HVZ). HAK's report at 13:01 on Monday no longer lists a closure on the D62 (HAK).
What it means for travellers
- Roads: HAK's report at 13:01 on Monday lists no closures or roadworks for Trogir, Seget or Čiovo, neither on the D58 nor on the D8 (HAK).
- Tuesday and Wednesday: police will regulate traffic on the D8 from Trogir to Split and on Split's main roads from Tuesday 16:00 to Wednesday 19:00, for the MED9 summit and the Croatia v Spain match (about 33,000 people expected). Expect short stops as delegations pass and slow traffic from Kaštela towards Split on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, and the other way on Wednesday afternoon; allow extra time for the airport (Split-Dalmatia police).
- Fire rules after the summer: under Split-Dalmatia County's decision, any open fire, from burning garden waste to a campfire or a barbecue outside a designated spot, needs the local fire brigade's approval between 1 October and 31 May, requested on 193. Throwing matches or cigarette butts onto open ground is banned all year; fines for individuals are 150 to 500 euros (Split-Dalmatia County).
- The risk has not gone: the weather service DHMZ rated the fire danger for Sunday 4 October as high at Split-Marjan, the station nearest Trogir, and very high at Makarska and on Hvar. Its outlook issued on Monday expects rain and thunderstorms on the Adriatic in the second half of the week and strong bura with storm-force gusts on Friday (DHMZ fire danger, DHMZ outlook).
