Zadar rewards a day that ends at the water: everything old sits on one small peninsula, and the two instruments at its tip need the evening to make sense. So this plan runs towards sunset. Every stop is linked.
- 09:00In through the Land Gate
The Venetian gate of 1543 with its winged lion is still the proper way onto the peninsula. Everything from here is on foot.
- 09:30Five Wells and the morning coffee
The square over the old cistern, plane trees, first coffee. From here the Kalelarga runs the length of the peninsula.
- 10:30The forum and St Donatus
A Roman forum used as a playground, and the round ninth-century church built straight onto its stones. In August the church hosts evening concerts; check the door for the poster.
- 12:00Gold and Silver of Zadar
Reliquaries the nuns of St Mary's guarded through every siege and war. One floor, half an hour, and the reason this city calls itself old with a straight face.
- 13:30Lunch off the Kalelarga
Two lanes off the main street the menus lose their photos and gain their prices. Look for the day's fish by weight.
- 15:00Ancient glass, or the ferry to Ugljan

- 19:30Sea organ, sit on the steps
The waves play the pipes under the marble steps, and the hour before sunset is the concert. Hitchcock called this the most beautiful sunset in the world; our sunset guide has the timing month by month.
- 20:30Greeting to the Sun, stay for the blue hour
The solar floor next to the organ stores the day and plays it back as light. Twenty minutes after sundown it is at its best, and the crowd thins.
