Varaždin was Croatia's capital until it burned in 1776, rebuilt itself in one baroque piece, and fits into one day on foot. Here is that day, station by station. Every stop is linked; tap through for photos, background and the exact spot on the map.
- 09:00Coffee on King Tomislav Square
Start where the town starts. The town hall on the north side has been in use since 1523; on Saturdays the Purgari guard changes in front of it around noon, so you may want to loop back.
- 09:45The cathedral, five minutes of gold
Two streets east. The gilded altar wall is the single richest baroque interior in town, and if the door is open outside mass, it costs nothing.
- 10:30Through the Lisak tower to the castle
The last gate tower of the town walls is still the way in, as it has been for four centuries. Behind it: the white castle with its moat, the city museum inside, the meadow that becomes the Špancirfest main stage.
- 12:00Old masters opposite the drawbridge
The rococo Sermage palace holds the picture gallery; one ticket window sells the castle and the gallery together. Skip it without guilt if the weather is fine and take the moat walk instead.
- 13:00Lunch off the square
One street away from Tomislav square the prices drop and the portions grow. Zagorje cuisine is the local register: štrukli, turkey with mlinci, young cheese. This is not seafood country, and the menus are honest about it.
- 15:00The cemetery that is really a park
Fifteen minutes west: Herman Haller spent forty years clipping thuja hedges into green arcades so that visitors walk among the living. Protected garden architecture, and the quietest hour of this day.
- 17:00Insects in a palace
Back through the centre to the Herzer palace: 4,500 exhibits from one teacher's life work, dioramas and drawers you open yourself. Sounds niche, is the museum people remember.
- 20:00An evening in red and gold
The national theatre of 1873 plays a full season at prices Vienna forgot were possible. In late August the alternative is simpler: the whole town is a stage during Špancirfest.
