Špancirfest 2026

Ten days when the city belongs to whoever is walking through it

Špancirfest takes its name from a verb: špancirati, to stroll. That is the whole instruction. From 21 to 30 August 2026 the baroque centre of Varaždin holds around 600 programme items spread across 23 festival zones, and none of them expects you to have a ticket in your hand or a plan in your head. You walk, and the programme finds you. This is the 28th edition, and more than 300,000 people come each year to a town of 40,000.

The concerts, evening by evening

The music runs on two stages of very different character. The PAN stage sits below the walls of the old castle and takes the big names; Vila Bedeković holds the small, seated, ticketed evenings. The opening on 21 August is a gala that puts the Zagreb Soloists, soprano Evelin Novak, the Varaždin Trio, Nikola Hrupek, the Gelato Sisters, Zdenka Kovačiček and Robert Mareković's Swingers on one bill, followed by Tragom Olivera, a tribute to Oliver Dragojević.

Amira Medunjanin and Doris Dragović are also on the 2026 bill. The big stage evenings are free; only Vila Bedeković charges.

What actually happens in the streets

Street performers come from around ten European countries: acrobats, fire acts, costumed figures who hold still until a child gives in and touches them. The zones have their own tempers. King Tomislav Square and Franciscan Square carry the crowds, Gajeva and Uršulinska the artisan stalls, the Creative Park on Habdelićeva the workshops. Old crafts are demonstrated rather than described, which is the difference between a market and a museum.

What costs money and what does not

Almost everything outdoors is free: the street programme, the big concerts, the children's shows, the exhibitions. Tickets exist for exactly one address, Vila Bedeković, where theatre starts around 16 euros and concerts run 25 to 30 plus booking fee. Buy those in advance; the room is small and the festival sells it out.

Getting there and parking

Do not drive into the centre, it is closed and full. The festival opens four free car parks on the edge of town with free shuttles into the centre, and city buses run free for the whole ten days. Varaždin is an hour from Zagreb by road and sits on the rail line, which makes an evening concert and a late train back a realistic plan.

How it started in 1999

The first edition ran from 2 to 5 September 1999 and was called Špancir fest, in two words. The local paper announced it as a festival of street walkers. The idea was blunt and has not changed: show Varaždin to the people of Varaždin, and show Varaždin to everyone else. Horse carriages drove through town, there were children's plays and a photo workshop, and visitors could pay a toll to enter the old town, a joke about medieval gates that the town has kept fond of. Nothing like it existed in Croatia at the time.
