Four days on the ramparts with knights, fire and food cooked over open flame. Thursday is free, Saturday is full, and the night attack is the reason to stay late.

Koprivnica is an hour and a half northeast of Zagreb, and for most of the year there is no particular reason to go. For four days in August the town uses the earth ramparts of its renaissance fortifications for what they were built for, and it becomes one of the few historical festivals in the region that is not mostly a market with a costume.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday

Thursday costs nothing and is the quietest, which makes it the best day with small children. Friday and Saturday carry the full programme and cost five euros, children under twelve free. Saturday evening is when the ramparts are shoulder to shoulder for the night attack. Sunday winds down and is the day to walk through the camps and actually talk to people.

Eat there, and eat the carp

Šaran na rašljama is carp split open, pinned to a forked stick and stood at an angle beside an open fire until it is done, which takes hours and is the whole reason it tastes like that. It is a Podravina dish, it is cooked in the open at the festival, and you can stand and watch the whole process. Everything else on offer is fine; this is the thing to have.

The night attack

After dark the ramparts are attacked with fire balls, burning arrows, cannon, muskets and arquebuses. It is genuinely loud, the smoke drifts, and small children who were delighted all afternoon sometimes are not. Stand back from the wall rather than under it, and if you have a toddler, consider watching from the outer side.
