Ten, twenty or thirty kilometres through the Lika
Croatia's largest walking festival takes place at Gospić on 5 and 6 September 2026, with marked routes of ten, twenty and thirty kilometres. It is a walk, not a race: there is no clock, and the distances are chosen so that a reasonably fit person can pick one in the morning without training for it. Online registration closes on 30 August.
What the Lika actually looks like
This is the empty middle of Croatia: karst plateau between the Velebit and the Dinaric ridge, sinkholes, stone walls, villages that lost most of their people twice in the last century. In September the light is long and the temperature is walkable, which it is not in July. Nikola Tesla was born a few kilometres away in Smiljan, where the homestead is now a museum worth an afternoon.
