Croatia's largest walking festival crosses the Lika from Gospić and Otočac on the first weekend of September. Online registration closes on 28 August, entry is 7 to 20 euro in advance and up to 30 on the day.

The Lika is the empty middle of Croatia: karst plateaus, the Velebit on one side, villages far apart and almost no traffic. Once a year several thousand people walk across it together. The Croatian Walking Festival takes place on the first weekend of September, based in Gospić and Otočac, and the one date that matters right now is the registration deadline.

What the fee covers

  • A start number, water and fruit along the route, and the official festival shirt.
  • Transport between the two host towns, Gospić and Otočac, which is what makes the routes point to point instead of loops.
  • Routes of different lengths on both days, so a family and a long-distance walker can start from the same square.

Being there

Gospić is two hours from Zagreb and forty minutes from the coast at Karlobag, which puts it within reach of a weekend from either side. Early September in the Lika is the good season: warm days, cold nights, and the plateau is dry. Bring layers, the temperature difference between the 6:30 start and midday is larger here than on the coast. Plitvice is an hour north, if the walking has not been enough.

If the first September weekend was the walking one, the second is the folklore one, in Slavonia.
