The village that holds the record
In November 1999 Giancarlo Zigante and his dog Diana dug up a white truffle of 1.31 kilograms in the forest near Livade. It went into the Guinness book as the largest ever found, and the name on the festival is his. Livade is a village of a few hundred people in the Mirna valley, and for five weekends from 3 October to 1 November 2026 it holds the white truffle fair every Saturday and Sunday.
What to do there
Taste before you buy, and buy by weight from the stalls rather than in a jar. White truffle is a seasonal thing that loses its point within days, so what you carry home is either eaten this week or was a souvenir all along. The Mirna valley oak forest around the village is where the truffles come from, and the surrounding hill towns, Motovun above all, are ten minutes away and worth the detour.
