A military base until 1989, which is why Vis has no resort strip and no coastal road worth the name. What it has instead: a British fort from the Napoleonic wars, a bay reachable only by boat or a steep scramble, and Komiža, where men once chased sardines in sailing boats.

Vis is the farthest inhabited island from the Croatian mainland, and it spent the decades after the war as a Yugoslav military base closed to foreigners until 1989. That is why it has no resort strip: forty years of no development, then a late start. The island is small enough for one day if you have a car, and the ferry from Split takes just over two hours.

Wealthy families put up their summer villas in this quarter when Vis traded with Venice. Narrow lanes, carved doorways and shaded courtyards, and at the end of them a quiet stretch of waterfront.

The British put this fort up during the Napoleonic wars to protect their Adriatic naval base. Climb to the ramparts above the bay; there is a bar inside now, and the sun goes down over the harbour from up there.

Two rock walls swing towards each other and leave only a narrow gate to the open sea, enclosing a perfect circle of turquoise water. Come by boat, or take the steep scramble down from the road above and count on the climb back.

For centuries the men of Komiža chased sardines in fast falkuša sailing boats, going as far as distant fishing grounds. Get lost in the tangle of stone houses around the harbour, where nets still hang out to dry.

On the neighbouring island of Biševo, morning sun hits the sea floor and floods the cave with silver-blue light through an underwater opening. It only works before noon and only in calm water, so it is the one thing you plan the day around, not into it.
