The Lungomare, laid out for emperors over a hundred years ago, runs from the fishing village of Volosko past Opatija to Lovran. Walking it is the town: the villas, the bronze girl with the seagull, the bathing terraces and the mountain behind.

Opatija was a fishing village until a merchant built a villa here in 1844 and named it after his late wife. Within decades it was the Austrian empire's seaside resort, and the shape it took then is the shape it still has: a shaded promenade along the water, grand houses above it, and bathing terraces cut into the rock. The town is best understood on foot, in one line from end to end.

The classicist villa the merchant Iginio Scarpa built in 1844 and named after his dead wife: the spark that turned a fishing village into an imperial resort. The park around it still holds the exotic plants the era demanded.

On the rocks below the promenade, a slender bronze figure lifts a gull towards the sky, and has done since 1956. Behind her the Kvarner bay opens wide. Come back at sunset if you can; the bronze glows over the water.

The shaded path was laid out over a hundred years ago for emperors and their guests, and it still connects Volosko with Opatija and Lovran. Waves break on the rocks on one side, villas and palm gardens line the other. Walking the northern half takes about forty minutes.
- 12:30Slatina, the town's bathing terraces
Slide off the concrete terraces into clear water, as people have done here since the spa years. It sits right on the promenade, so swimmers, cafés and the hum of summer Opatija all share the same few metres.

Bronze stars set into the promenade honour Croatians who shaped science, sport or culture: Nikola Tesla, Ruđer Bošković, the basketball player Dražen Petrović and others. It is a quiet way to learn a country's own list of who matters.

Behind the town the beech woods of the Učka nature park climb to Vojak, the highest peak of the range. From the round stone tower the view runs over the Kvarner islands and Istria, and on clear days as far as the Alps and Venice. Take water and half a day.
