Superyachts off Mljet, and what the island offers them

Croatian media including tportal and Dalmacija Danas reported on 25 August that Jeff Bezos, WhatsApp founder Jan Koum and media investor Barry Diller were aboard the same vessel off the southern Dalmatian island of Mljet. The yacht, Koum's hundred-metre Moonrise, is valued at close to two hundred million euro and carries sixteen guests with a crew of thirty-two. None of the three commented, and neither did the port authority.

Mljet turns up on these itineraries regularly. Polače is one of the best sheltered bays in the southern Adriatic, deep enough for large vessels and closed on three sides, and the island has no harbour town of the size that draws crowds. Bezos cruised the Adriatic in the summers of 2023 and 2025 with recorded stops at Hvar, Korčula and Mljet; Koum's Moonrise was photographed between Lopud and Šipan in 2021 and again in 2024.

What it means for visitors

Practically nothing. The national park keeps its normal hours, the solar boat to the monastery islet runs as usual and no bay is closed off. Vessels pay their own separate tariff to enter park waters, which is what the park authority publishes alongside the visitor price list. If the coverage sends you looking at the island for the first time, the lakes are the reason to go, and they cost fifteen euro outside the summer months.
