Croatia motorway tolls in 2026: what drivers need to know

The short answer for 2026 is simple: Croatia does not use one national motorway vignette. On most tolled motorways, the amount depends on the section travelled and the vehicle category. In a closed system, you register at the entrance, usually with a ticket or an ENC device, then pay at the exit. Some sections use an open system with one toll point. The official operator Hrvatske autoceste, usually shortened to HAC, publishes the current tariffs by route.

How to pay at Croatian toll plazas

• Bank card: HAC lists Mastercard, Maestro and Visa among the accepted cards at its toll points.
• Cash: cash payment remains available at HAC toll points. Croatia uses the euro.
• ENC: the electronic device uses dedicated lanes and avoids taking a paper ticket on supported motorways.

When ENC makes sense

ENC is most useful for repeat drivers, longer road trips and busy summer weekends. HAC says the device works on its main A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A10 and A11 routes, plus the D425 connection. The Istrian Y is operated separately by Bina Istra and requires the corresponding account arrangement for ENC use there. A one-time visitor can still use ordinary toll lanes without buying a device. For a single return trip, card payment is usually the simpler choice.

Check the route on the day you drive

Toll prices are only half the planning problem in summer. Queues can form around major toll areas and approaches to the coast, especially on peak changeover days. HAK publishes live road conditions, closures and traffic forecasts. Check it shortly before departure instead of relying on a screenshot from the previous evening. If the forecast is heavy, changing the departure time is often more useful than searching for a small toll saving.
