Three weekends, three villages, one chestnut
The marun is a particular sweet chestnut that grows on the slopes above Lovran, larger and sweeter than the ordinary kind, and the festival named after it moves through three places in October 2026: Lovran from the 9th to the 11th, Dobreć on the 17th and 18th, Liganj on the 24th and 25th. Roasted chestnuts, chestnut cake, chestnut ice cream, chestnut in things that have no business containing chestnut.
Lovran itself
The old town is small, medieval and built of stone that has not been prettified: narrow lanes, a fourteenth-century church tower, and on one house the Mustaćon, a stone face with a moustache that locals have their own stories about. The Lungomare, the coastal promenade, runs from here twelve kilometres to Volosko past Opatija, and October is the month it was made for.
