Home of the Croatia Open, the country's only ATP clay-court tournament.
The Stella Maris tennis centre is the home of the Croatia Open, Croatia's only ATP clay-court tournament and one of the few on the Adriatic: the tournament has been played in Umag since 1990, at the end of July, and every year brings the world's top players to town, among them some who won their first career titles here. The centre has a central stadium with several thousand seats and a row of auxiliary courts, and during the season the courts are open to recreational players too, with hourly rental and a tennis school.
For visitors in tournament week the town changes: concerts on the beach, a gastro zone, evening programmes and an audience from all over Europe, and tickets for the early rounds are affordable. Outside that week the centre is a quiet place by the sea, with pines around the courts and a view of the bay. It lies two kilometres south of the core, by the Stella Maris hotel complex, and the coastal promenade leads to it.
Tickets for the early rounds are the cheapest, and the tennis is no worse.
