Why it is worth your time

The monument to the fallen fighters stands on a rise above Umag and belongs to that layer of Croatian monuments created in the Yugoslav era: a stone and concrete composition raised in memory of the people of the Umag region who died in the Second World War, with plaques and names, in a form that was then usual, monumental and abstract. For a visitor from Europe such monuments are interesting as architecture too: Yugoslav memorial objects are recognisable for avoiding the figurative and seeking their effect through form and position in the landscape, and today more and more people visit them for precisely that reason.

The monument is accessible and free, and from the platform around it opens a view of the town, the marina and the sea toward Savudrija. It lies a few minutes' drive from the core; boards at the approach explain the context, and the space itself is today also a place for a walk.
