Umag Town Museum

Why it is worth your time

The Umag City Museum is set in a restored tower of the town walls and is one of the few museums toured vertically: on three levels inside the tower are displayed finds from the Umag region, from prehistoric hillforts and Roman amphorae from the seabed to medieval fragments and objects from the period of Venetian rule. The section on underwater archaeology is especially interesting, because the sea around Umag and Sipar is full of cargo from ships that never reached Trieste or Venice. The display changes and is supplemented by exhibitions of contemporary authors, and the tower itself, with thick walls and narrow windows, is as much part of the story as the exhibits.

From the top one looks onto the roofs of the core and the sea on both sides of the peninsula. The museum is small and toured in half an hour, the ticket is modest, and it works through the season and by arrangement outside it. It lies by the main square, so it fits easily into a walk through the old town.
