Why it is worth your time

The Porer lighthouse stands on a rock some eighty metres across, two and a half kilometres from Istria's southernmost point, and is one of the Adriatic's most exposed lighthouses: the tower, thirty-five metres tall, was raised in 1833 and since then marks the dangerous fairway around Cape Kamenjak, where currents collide and the sea is rarely calm. Around the lighthouse there is nothing but stone and sea; no tree, no beach, no neighbours. Precisely that made it famous: in the building by the tower two apartments have been fitted for rent, so one can spend the night on Porer, with the only neighbour being the keeper and with the dinner you brought yourself.

Transport is arranged by boat from Premantura or Pula, and in bad weather there is no sailing. For visitors without an overnight stay, Porer is the best sunset motif from Kamenjak: the sun falls exactly behind the tower and leaves it as a silhouette against the red.
