What's on in Croatia: 17 to 31 August 2026

The last two weeks of August are the busiest fortnight in the Croatian events calendar and the hardest to plan. Two of the country's biggest electronic festivals run back to back in the same village, the Roman arena in Pula hosts three international acts in eight days, and inland Croatia stages two of its largest street festivals while the coast is still at peak season prices. Here is the whole fortnight in one place, with the times and prices the organisers publish. Where a promoter has published no price, we say so instead of guessing.

The short version

Varaždin: Špancirfest, 21 to 30 August

Špancirfest is the reason to point a car inland this month. Ten festival days spread around 600 separate programme items across 23 festival zones in the baroque centre of Varaždin, roughly 200 of them musical, with street performers from about ten countries and the main PAN stage right below the Old Town castle. Almost all of it is free. Only the concerts and theatre performances in the grounds of Vila Bedeković are ticketed, and those are the ones that sell out.

On the free side the line-up includes Kosheen, Dubioza Kolektiv, Plavi Orkestar, Zabranjeno pušenje and Zoster, plus a tribute concert to Oliver Dragojević. The organisers also run secret concerts at unannounced locations in the historic centre, revealed shortly before they start. New for 2026 are the Kooglach ice cream zone and the Dolce Vita Garden, and the family zones on Ljudevita Gaja street run from 10:00 to 20:00.

Tisno: two festivals in ten days

The Garden site at Petrića Glava 34 in Tisno hosts Dekmantel Selectors from 20 to 24 August, its tenth edition, and Dimensions Festival from 27 to 31 August. Dimensions alone brings more than 150 artists across house, techno, electro and breaks, among them Helena Hauff, John Talabot and Moritz von Oswald. Both are effectively closed shops for latecomers: Dekmantel sold out its €138 regional pass, which is limited to citizens of Croatia and the neighbouring countries and checked against ID at the gate, and Dimensions was sold out in mid August with Resident Advisor resale the only official route in. Without a ticket, treat Tisno as a place to sleep rather than a plan.

Pula: three shows in eight days

The Roman amphitheatre runs its densest stretch of the summer: Lorde on 18 August, Tom Odell with the A Wonderful Life tour on 23 August, and Judas Priest on 25 August. All three start at 20:00 and are sold through Eventim HR. Lorde's show is part of the Ultrasound world tour and is her first Croatian date since two sold-out nights at St Michael's Fortress in Šibenik. One thing to check if you hold a ticket for 3 September: the Hollywood Vampires concert has been moved from Pula to Arena Zagreb.

Karlovac and Koprivnica: the cheap end of the calendar

The 39th Dani piva takes over Karlovac's star-shaped Zvijezda district from 28 August to 1 September. It is Croatia's longest-running beer festival, with two stages and a zone for domestic and international brewers. Severina headlines the opening night, with the ceremony at 20:30 on 28 August and her set at 21:00, and Petar Grašo closes on 1 September. Half a litre of draught Karlovačko is fixed at €2.50 for the whole festival, and the organisers lay on a free festival train between Zagreb and Karlovac.

If you are travelling with children, the Renaissance Festival in Koprivnica is the best value on the calendar. It opens at 19:00 on Thursday 20 August and runs to Sunday 23 August, with 21 Croatian knight groups plus performers from around ten countries, two stages, archery tournaments, fire shows and a night siege re-enactment. Thursday is free, including parking. Friday to Sunday costs €5 per person and €3 for parking. Koprivnica is roughly an hour and a half from Zagreb by road, so it works as a day trip from the capital.

Dubrovnik and Zagreb

The 77th Dubrovnik Summer Festival ends on 25 August after more than 70 performances and over 2,000 artists. Two dates stand out in the closing stretch, both on the island of Lokrum: the premiere of Ibsen's The Lady From The Sea at 21:00 on 20 August and pianist David Khrikuli at 21:30 on 22 August. Tickets go through the festival box office at Od Sigurate 1 or online, and resale tickets are frequently refused at the gate. Zagreb meanwhile costs nothing: Ljeto na Strossu turns the Upper Town promenade into an open-air venue through 31 August, and the Zrinjevac dance nights run Fridays and Saturdays until 29 August, with gates at 17:00, a dance workshop from 18:00 and concerts from 20:00 to 23:00.

What the travelling costs this fortnight

Two numbers belong in the budget. Fuel gets more expensive on Tuesday 18 August: petrol rises to €1.63 per litre and diesel to €1.80, which is about €4.20 and €5.40 more on a 60-litre tank than the week before. And national park tickets are still at peak rates, with Plitvice at €40 for adults through the end of September before it drops to €23.50 in October. If a park visit and an evening concert fall on the same day, the afternoon ticket windows are worth checking, since several parks price entry after 15:00 or 16:00 lower.

If you are heading into September

The 20th Vukovar Film Festival runs 2 to 5 September, with online tickets on sale since 11 August and the physical box office opening on 28 August. Giostra, the historical festival in Poreč, follows on 11 to 13 September. And the 61st Vinkovačke jeseni, Croatia's largest folklore review, runs 11 to 20 September in Vinkovci under the motto Vlak slavonske ravnice, opening with Jelena Rozga on 11 September, with the children's parade on 13 September and the grand parade on the final Sunday.
