Zagreb in summer empties towards the coast and what stays behind is better than its reputation. The Strossmayer promenade runs a few hundred metres along the old wall of the Upper Town, and from late spring it carries a programme every single day. No ticket, no booking, no list of names you need to know in advance.
Getting up there
From Ilica take the funicular, sixty-six metres of track and the shortest public funicular in the world, or the stairs beside it if the queue is long. From Ban Jelačić square the walk up through Radićeva takes ten minutes and passes the Stone Gate. Either way you arrive at the western end of the promenade, which is where the view is.
What is on and when
Afternoons belong to the children: puppet shows, workshops, painters who let you watch and sometimes join. From around eight the music starts, and across a season it runs to more than eighty concerts: jazz, evergreens, the nostalgic repertoire of the fifties, Latin, songwriters, Roma songs, the alternative end. Nothing lasts so long that you cannot leave, which is the etiquette here.
Five minutes away
The promenade sits between everything worth seeing in the Upper Town. The Lotrščak tower fires its cannon at noon and can be climbed; St Mark's church with the tiled roof is two streets away; the Stone Gate with its shrine is on the way down. If the evening programme is not to your taste, walk five minutes and come back for the next act.
