Why it is worth your time

The Vodice market works every morning by the waterfront and is the best proof that the town does not live only off tourists: the fish market opens around six, when the boats unload the night's catch, and stays open until it is sold out, usually by noon; on the stalls line up sardines, squid, picarels, scorpionfish and whatever entered the nets that night, and the prices are considerably lower than in the restaurants along the same waterfront. Beside the fish market works the fruit and vegetable market, with produce from the hinterland: tomatoes, figs, grapes, olive oil, honey, cheese and homemade brandy, all from the surrounding villages.

For guests in an apartment this is the smartest way to eat well and cheaply, and the sellers gladly say what is best that day and how it is prepared. Come before nine: later only what nobody took remains. The market is also the best place for a conversation with locals outside a service context, and on Sundays the offer is smaller.
