Gallery of Old and New Masters
The picture gallery in the rococo Sermage palace opposite the castle.
A private museum of angels in the old town, one artist's collection across two floors.
The Museum of Angels is a private collection in the heart of Varazdin's core and one of those places that fit no category: several thousand depictions of angels from all over the world, from baroque wooden statues and icons to porcelain, glass, textiles and contemporary artworks, all gathered by one collector's passion and set in rooms that are themselves part of the experience, with dimmed light and music. The display is not museologically strict but personal, and precisely for that visitors remember it: you are led through the rooms with the story of where each object comes from and what it meant to the people who made it.
The tour takes half an hour to an hour, depending on how much you ask. The museum is small and lies in a lane by the main square, the ticket is moderate, and the opening hours are narrower than at the city museums, so check before coming. For a rainy hour in Varazdin or for visitors who have seen enough baroque altars, this is a refreshment.
