Why it is worth your time

The monument to Fulvio Tomizza is dedicated to the writer who best described what this region is: born in 1935 in Materada near Umag, into a family that spoke both Croatian and Italian, Tomizza left for Italy after the Second World War with the wave of Istrian Italians, but returned here all his life and wrote about the border that runs through people, not only through maps. His novels, among them Materada, are translated into a dozen languages and are read today as the most accurate record of twentieth-century Istria.

The monument in Umag is modest and personal, and the town also carries his name in the literary meeting Forum Tomizza, which every May gathers writers from Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. For the visitor this place is a reminder that Umag is not only a beach but also a border town with bilingual signs, one that paid for its history with departures.
