May Day Square
The main square of the old town, on the narrow peninsula between two harbours.
The town hall beside the square, home of the winter programme.
The Antonio Coslovich town theatre is Umag's main hall and the place where the town lives when the beaches empty: a hall of several hundred seats in a building by the main square, carrying the name of an Umag cultural figure and holding, from autumn to spring, the town's entire programme, from theatre guest performances and concerts to children's plays, screenings and events of local societies. In summer part of the programme moves outdoors, to the square and the waterfront, but the hall remains the place where festivals and ceremonies are held.
For a visitor outside the season this is the best way to see how Umag works when it is not a resort: the audience is local, prices are lower than in bigger towns, and the programme is bilingual, in Croatian and Italian, because Umag is officially a bilingual community. The schedule is posted on placards by the entrance and on the town's pages; tickets are bought at the box office before the performance.
