Church of St Agnes

Why it is worth your time

The Church of St Agnes is the parish church of Medulin and the oldest building in the town still serving its purpose: it was raised on a rise above the bay, where the settlement formed while people still guarded themselves from the sea rather than living off it. Today's church is the result of several phases, with a core reaching into the Middle Ages and with renovations that gave it a baroque facade and bell tower; the interior is simple and bright, with an altar and several older stone fragments built into the walls.

Around the church is the old cemetery, and from the platform in front opens a view of the whole Medulin bay with its islets, the best free viewpoint in town. The church is open around the masses, and from the centre one climbs to it in five minutes through the narrow streets of the old part of Medulin. For a visitor who knows Medulin only from Bijeca beach, this climb shows that the town has a core older than all the apartments around it.
