Biserujka Cave

Why it is worth your time

The Biserujka is the underground side of Krk island: a dripstone cave by the village of Rudine in the island's north, above Slivanjska cove, with an arranged path through a hundred and ten metres of halls and channels. The entrance is modest, but the interior surprises: stalactites and stalagmites, flowstones and columns in halls with names like the Great Hall, at a constant temperature of some thirteen degrees for which the cave is a natural cooler in summer and warmer than the bura outside in winter. It carries its name from the legend of pirate treasure supposedly hidden and found in it; the treasure is gone, but the story turns the visit into a hunt for children.

The guided tour takes half an hour, the path is lit and safe, with some stairs; bring a light jacket and shoes that do not slip. The Biserujka is the island's best rain plan and a natural station of an outing toward Šilo and Vrbnik: half an hour of underground, then a swim in the cove below the cave. For children this is often the island's dearest point: a real speleological world, just big enough to be an adventure and small enough to tire nobody.
