Plitvice Lakes in late August: tickets, times and crowds

Plitvice Lakes is Croatia's most visited national park and the single most common day trip from Zadar, Split and Zagreb. It is also the trip most often planned on bad information, because a good share of the pages ranking for Plitvice tickets quote prices from three seasons ago. Everything below comes from the park's own published price list and operating hours, and from its own visitor analysis for 2024.

What a ticket costs in August 2026

The price list splits the day. There is a full-price day ticket for entry up to 16:00 during June, July and August, and a cheaper ticket for entry from 16:00 onwards.

Two other options are worth knowing. A two-day ticket, valid June to September, costs 60,00 euro for adults, 40,00 for students and 20,00 for children aged 7 to 18. Groups of at least 15 people get 1,50 to 2,00 euro off per adult or student ticket. Guided tours are priced separately at 120,00 euro for a half day and 170,00 for a full day, and car parking in peak season is 2,00 euro per hour. For comparison, the same adult day ticket drops to 10,00 euro in winter, which is the strongest argument for visiting outside July and August if your dates are flexible.

The timing that actually decides your day

Two things follow from that table. First, the hard cutoff is the ticket office at 17:00, not the entrance closing at 20:00. Second, the long boat routes stop at 18:30, which matters if you are attempting one of the longer lettered routes late in the day. A late-afternoon adult ticket at 25,00 euro is good value, but only with a route that does not depend on the long boat crossing.

Entrance 1 or Entrance 2

This is the decision that determines whether you spend your first hour walking or queuing. The park's own analysis for 2024 found that 61 percent of visitors started at Entrance 1 and 39 percent at Entrance 2. Entrance 1 sits at the Lower Lakes and gives the immediate view of the Great Waterfall: it is the one every tour bus and every guidebook photograph points at, and it is where the morning crush forms. Entrance 2 opens onto the Upper Lakes. Starting there in high season is the simplest crowd-avoidance tactic available, and it costs nothing.

How busy is it, really

The park recorded roughly 1.49 million visitors in 2024, from around 163 countries, with July and August as the peak months. The mix was 79 percent adults, 13.7 percent children aged 7 to 18 and 7.3 percent students, and 85 percent of visitors came from abroad. By origin, 77.7 percent were European, 12.8 percent came from Asian markets and 6 percent from the USA and Canada; after Croatia itself, Germany, Poland, France and Italy led the country ranking. The park also sold 149,156 accommodation nights in its own facilities, 93 percent of them to international guests.

Practical points people get wrong

• Book online. The park runs a timed-entry system, and buying at the gate on an August morning is how you lose an hour.
• Footwear. The park keeps one standing recommendation on its conditions page: adequate shoes. The boardwalks are wet, wooden and without railings for long stretches.

• Swimming is not allowed at Plitvice. This surprises people who have seen photographs. Krka is the national park that permits it, and only in designated areas at Roški slap, Stinice and Pisak, from 1 June to 30 September, not at Skradinski buk.
