Why it is worth your time

A stream called Medveščak once ran here, turning mills and dividing Gradec from Kaptol; today it is people who flow down Tkalčićeva. The low colourful houses with wooden balconies hold a string of cafés, konobas and small shops, and the terraces fill from the first morning espresso until long past midnight. Steps lead up to Dolac and Bloody Bridge, the shortest way into Zagreb's everyday life.

Croatia Atlas tip

Duck into any gateway: the courtyards behind the facades hide the street's quietest terraces.
