Why it is worth your time

A small Upper Town gem devoted to Croatia's world-famous naïve painters: self-taught village artists, above all of the Hlebine school, who painted dreamlike rural scenes in oil on the back of glass. Bright, strange and deeply Croatian, the collection turned untrained farmers into internationally collected masters. One of the few museums of its kind anywhere.

Croatia Atlas tip

Look for the glass paintings by Ivan Generalić: the back-of-glass technique gives them their glow.
