Why it is worth your time

The Vatroslav Jagic Promenade is the green ring around Varazdin's core, laid exactly where the city moat and ramparts once ran: when the city lost its defensive function in the 19th century, the moat was filled in and a tree-lined avenue planted in its place, which today borders the old core on three sides. The promenade carries the name of the linguist Vatroslav Jagic, a native of Varazdin and one of the most important Slavists of his time. The plane trees are today as tall and wide as the road they roof over, so the walk is shaded even on the hottest day; along the path are benches, children's playgrounds and approaches toward the Stari grad and the main square.

This is the easiest way to go round the whole centre: the circuit takes some twenty minutes, and on the way one passes the city palaces, the Lisak tower and the park around the fortress. For a visitor who has an hour in Varazdin, this circuit plus the main square are enough for a true picture of the city.
