Biokovo Foothill Trails

Walking trails through olives and pines above town, with views from Brac to Vis.

Activity Hidden gem

Why it is worth your time

The trails at the Biokovo's foot are the best way to see Brela from above: a net of walking paths leading from town through olives, pinewood and old dry walls toward the mountain's slopes, up to lookouts from which the riviera spreads like a map. The climb is not as demanding as it looks from below: well-trodden paths lead in serpentines, and the most popular route to Upper Brela takes an hour of easy walking and rewards with a view of Punta Rata, the island of Brac and, on clear days, Hvar and Vis in the distance. Whoever wants more sets off from the road above town toward the slopes of the Biokovo Nature Park, where the paths turn steep and the landscape bare and stony.

For all routes the same rules hold: set out early in the morning or in the late afternoon, bring twice as much water as you think you need, put on firm shoes and wear a hat. In spring and autumn the Biokovo is loveliest, the temperatures bearable and the visibility best. The reward is always the same: a sea that from above looks as if someone had poured it into stone.
