Why it is worth your time

Berulia carries Brela's ancient name and keeps to what that name promised: a shingle cove by the pine forest, north of Punta Rata, with sea just as clear and considerably fewer people. The Romans called this region Berulia, from which the cove took its name, and today's name Brela is derived from the same root; few places on the riviera carry their history so directly in a beach's name. The cove is arranged just enough: a part with loungers and a bar, the rest free shingle beneath pines, showers and cabins along the promenade, and gentle entries into the sea, with rock slabs for those who like a jump.

Because of its position in the point's lee the sea here is calm, and the undersea springs keep it fresh even in August. Berulia is the best choice for a day when Punta Rata looks too tight: it is five minutes' walk away, and the difference in the crowd is twofold. By the cove work hotels and restaurants, so a day is easily composed without returning to the centre.
