Why it is worth your time

Beneath the palace, a forest of Roman vaults survives exactly where the emperor's seaside apartments once stood above: sealed for centuries by rubbish, they preserved the floor plan of rooms long demolished overhead. Cool, cavernous and atmospheric, the halls hosted Daenerys's dragons in Game of Thrones and now shelter a row of stalls leading up to the Peristyle.

Croatia Atlas tip

Walk up through the cellars from the Riva to emerge dramatically onto the Peristyle: the best way in.
